Globe Tattoo or Smart Bro, Which one is better?

Time for another misc tip :).

I’m currently in Startbucks as I write this and one of the barristas asked me earlier if I use globe tattoo or smart bro for my Mifi (pocket WiFi). I actually have both the wireless one and a USB dongle. I have both unlocked as well.

I explained to her that I use both, but I’m more into Smart now.

UPDATE: I just finished a post about dc-unlocker, the app I used to unlock my globe tattoo usb dongle and pocket wifi. So if you’re interested in that one you can read it here:

UPDATE 5/13/2013: I used to think that smart capped its torrent but looks like they don’t. I just downloaded a torrent and my speed was 400-500KB/s, INSANE I know lol. I finished downloading a 900 MB file in 30 minutes more or less lol. This is the first time I’ve seen it go that fast. Might be because it’s election day, a holiday and maybe not many people are using 3g right now so I got that high. I dunno. After that one download I can’t seem to replicate the speed anymore. Now I’m back to 40-100 KB/s speeds again, my normal speed for torrent downloads. This is on a normal 3g smart pocket wifi FYI, it’s not LTE or rocket wifi.

UPDATE 2/11/2014: Globe’s Fair Usage Policy Infographic is up on my Facebook Page

Here’s my story

Dami ko nang na collect

Dami ko nang na collect

I originally started with Globe and was satisfied for a long time because the speeds were decent. At least in my area it was.

We used to have a broadband connection, the usual 800 or 900 pesos per month thing and that was great. But my mom thought that it was distracting me and my brothers too much (my older brother was reviewing for the Bar while me and my younger bro are law students) so she had it cut off.

Since I couldn’t live without internet I decided to get myself a globe tattoo dongle and it was great for a while.

Like everyone else there were times na napuputol nalang bigla yung connection. There were also occasions when it was soooo slow that it almost felt like you had no connection at all.

So there were some bad experiences but for the most part it did it’s job. It was decent for browsing, email checking, Facebook, and blogging.  And I’m out most of the time anyway since I like to study/work in coffee shops so I only really needed to use it when I was at the apartment.

BUT, and this is the clincher that made me switch, I always  go for the daily unlimited surfing thing that they have (Supersurf 50) and I absolutely hate the 800 MB cap.

I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate it.

I love watching documentaries on YouTube and this is what usually got me capped when I was still using globe tattoo. You can still surf the net once you’re capped but you’ll have to unsubscribe to the unlisurf thing and you’ll be charged the usual rate (10 pesos per 30 mins I believe).

I also do a lot of torrent downloads but for some reason it’s really slow with Globe. They must have set a cap for torrent downloads as well. I think the fastest I get with globe is around 10 KB, that might be the limit.

So after months of Globe internet I finally decided to give Smart Bro a try.

I never go for the data plans because I usually work in places that have WiFi anyway (like I said I’m always in coffee shops) so I don’t need everyday up-time. I just want a device that I can use for those days when I decide to stay at home or for when I go out of town.

I got the Smart Bro prepaid dongle. Later on I bought a pocket WiFi on TipidPC and unlocked it.

Smart vs Globe Internet Verdict

Anyway, speed wise I “think” that smart is a lot faster than Globe in my area. I live in Paco, Manila by the way.

Yes there are still occasional slow downs and disconnections but I doubt this’ll disappear no matter what network I use. I mean it happens even with broadband data line connections so how much more 3g, 3g+ and even 4g ones.

But what really closed the deal for me was the fact the Smart Bro is uncapped. Meaning I don’t have to deal with the same 800 MB limit that Globe has.

Seriously, I don’t understand why Globe set a cap like that when their competitor Smart can offer something that just blows their data service away.

I use my Smart connection for torrent downloads and for watching full movies and documentaries on Youtube and it works great.

It’s much better than Globe and depending on where you are (if you’re in one of the 4g areas) it can even be much faster than data line connections.

I can download a movie in 2 or 3 hours sometimes, and sitcom episodes in just 30 minutes.

So the verdict:

SMART wins hands down

But I still keep my globe sim in case Smart goes down :). This has happened to me before and I’m glad that I had an alternative.

So if you can have your USB dongle or your pocket WiFi unlocked I suggest you get both. But if you can only pick one, Smart Bro is probably the better choice unless for some reason your area is having problems with their network.

If you want to learn how to unlock your Globe Tattoo, Smart Bro, or Sun Broadband USB or Pocket wifi, be sure to check out my other post about dc-unlocker. You can read it here:

I think Smoart Bro is my choice. I was using it back when I was in the Philippines and it works good.

    • Malds 21 February, 2013 at 11:04 am

yup smart is, in my opinion as well, faster than globe. Plus it’s uncapped.

      • justmine 8 April, 2013 at 9:39 pm

        • edsan 23 April, 2013 at 4:07 pm

Tanong ko lang.. panu ba pinapa-loadan yung gantong device? or pinapaloadan ba talaga? Globe yung gamit ko now pero unlocked na sya so pede rin ako mag smart..

          • Malds 23 April, 2013 at 4:52 pm

as far as i know di kasi kaya mag load thro text so hassle. Ginagawa ko either e-load/pasaload, or ililipat ko muna sa phone ko yung sim tas dun ako magloload ng regular way (yung kelangan mo “tawagan” yung cellcard number)

          • mary jane 28 April, 2013 at 12:11 pm

edsan, pano ba mag unlock ng device? thank you.

          • Malds 29 April, 2013 at 12:36 am

Hey Mary, check mo article ko about how i did it :). then basa basa ka ng konti sa forums ng dc unlocker to check if kaya mo iunlock yourself.

          • Malds 2 May, 2013 at 4:10 pm

          • DiscoPandaXXX 2 May, 2013 at 4:18 pm

LoL.. pero.. na try kuna.. SmartBro 200 load ko.. kaya naman mag download 4gb.. XDD pero.. kala ko kada unlisurf 50 4.0mbps Unlisurf 200 7.4mbps.. kala ko ganyan XDD ohkay.. salamat..

Di ako adik.. Hobby ko lng talaga mga Games. XD bored kasi

          • Malds 2 May, 2013 at 4:49 pm

          • Sergsjhon Aliser 13 May, 2013 at 10:55 pm

I HOPE I cAN recieve a ASAP :) ill wait for a reply

          • Malds 13 May, 2013 at 11:20 pm

Hi sergs, medyo kelangan mo talaga i check muna with the device kung ok sa inyo yung signal/speed. san ka ba nakatira?

            2g – pinakamabagal
3g – yung normal na nasasagap mo using your typical usb dongle or pocketwifi
4g LTE – yung pinaka mabilis, pinaka recent, and pinaka mahal lol.

          • elmer 3 August, 2013 at 6:10 pm

Download smart/globe services to avail unlisurf or other promo (pde yan sa android and ios), para hindi mo na kelangan ilipat sa phone ung sim

    • Dongskie Albofera 6 August, 2015 at 8:42 pm

so far I am using postpaid Globe Tattoo Gosurf 999 for 1 year for now…di ko po naranasan na nag throttle yung connection ko…there’s no capping @ all kahit mag youtube pa ako sa isang buong araw…according to them di po under ng FUP ang Gosurf nila na plan….my connection is only 3G network kahit mag laro pa ako ng Dota 2 still runs smoothly w/ out lags….

  2. Ryuu 3 March, 2013 at 3:41 pm

Alright, thank you very much sir. We’re about to move to another residence (a condo in Sta. Ana, Manila) kasi you see. And our PLDT DSL subscription would take a while to migrate. My ma saw this billboard of Smart and said that we should try it out while the landline /DSL was being migrated.

At first I was very apprehensive because of Globe’s data caps (800 MB/day, I mean come on, they’d surely lose the battle with Smart if they go on like this. Also, their “UNLIMITED” LTE? xD What a joke, there was a deadline for the “unlimited” part. Bunch of liars.). ._.

Anyway, thank you again for the info :D.

    • Malds 3 March, 2013 at 4:50 pm

No prob and thanks for dropping by my blog :).

Sta Ana isn’t too far from my place since Paco din lang naman ako so I think your smart speed shouldn’t be too different from mine. Pwede kayo mag USB lang muna till matapos migration ng PLDT nyo or if you want wifi, maybe get one of the pocket wifi’s like the one I use. 50 peso per day yung unli nya and 300 pesos yung one week (I’ve started using this a lot more often now).

Decent yung download speeds even sa torrent especially pag gabi. You should be able to hold out with just Smart till your DSL is transferred.

And regarding globe, yeah they really need to step up their game. I don’t understand why they still have that 800 mb cap thing. I suppose ok lang yun if you’re just using the net for twitter or Facebook pero local internet is moving to the wireless direction na and I really think at some point we’re all going to ditch the cables and use cellular network to transfer data.

Kasi 4G is sooooo fast na nga. Even 3g is decent, papantayan na nya yung broadband speed tapos wireless pa sya. They need to up their DATA connection strategy if they want to compete in the industry.

Wala talagang competition kasi ngayon between globe and smart. Globe just gets blown away because of the 800 MB cap thing.

  3. Kat 11 March, 2013 at 1:30 pm

I pretty much have the same sentiments. I had a Globe DSL for close to 5 years, but had to cut the line when I moved. Opted to get a postpaid SmartBro because of my past experience with it in our area, but using prepaid. So far so good.

    • Malds 11 March, 2013 at 2:07 pm

Awesome. Smart does have it’s own problems re connection from time to time but for the most part it’s a lot more solid than globe in my opinion (prepaid). Plus I actually get to do torrent downloads on smart so that makes up for most of the issues I have on it :).

  4. Laney 12 March, 2013 at 3:27 am

I completely agree. I actually have smart bro and globe prepaid stick I also have sun wifi. In our area (I’m from Las Pinas) Smart is faster and more reliable than Globe. I only have the starter kit for smart and I thought of buying a better dongle and ended up buying Globe. It was really slow I can’t even open my email. My sun wifi was even faster than Globe.

    • Malds 12 March, 2013 at 3:33 am

I actually got the 4g globe dongle and the globe mifi, and just had both unlocked para I can use smart and globe :). I switch them up from time to time. If you’ve got the 4g capable globe usb just have it unlocked.

  5. Sid 27 March, 2013 at 12:50 am

I hate the 800 mb capping limitation of my prepaid Globe Tattoo and it’s slow connection. I live in Congressional Avenue extension in Quezon City. I decided to buy a Smart Bro USB Dongle because it has no capping. I tried the Smart Bro free 120 hours and I was amazed that there was no buffer while I watch videos and surfing was faster than using Globe broadband.

    • Malds 27 March, 2013 at 2:31 pm

Its not Always like that tho, the youtube no buffer thing. But most of the time it is so smart has my vote when it comes to 3g and 4g connection.

  6. Arian 1 April, 2013 at 9:58 am

Is the smart pocket wifi good for video chatting like on Skype? I have a globe broadband plan at home but I rarely use it because I’m always out of the house. Is it better to just cut my broadband plan and switch to smart wifi pocket?
By the way,do you know if 2mbps is fast for video chatting also?

    • Malds 2 April, 2013 at 12:30 pm

If you rarely use your internet baka makatipid ka with just prepaid internet ng smart. Youll be able to carry it around and 50 pesos lang na,an ang unli for one day and 300 for a week. Compute mo muna tho. I cant really say for sure kasi di ko naman alam exact monthly usage mo.

And re video chatting, 2 mbps is fast na for that. Unles super high res yan you hindi dapat sobrang laki yung kinakain ng video chat. If you can load youtube for example na diredirecho, na mga 480 or 720 na resolution, you should have no problems with video chat.

  7. justmine 8 April, 2013 at 9:41 pm

sir malds.. any model po from smart pocket wifi is OK po??

    • Malds 9 April, 2013 at 12:10 am

I don’t know lang sa medyo rural areas talaga. And my pocket wifi is Huawei E5832, old model na yan actually. There should be newer ones out already but I got this one a year ago pa I think and I never bothered replacing it since it still does what it needs to do :).

  8. mary anne 10 April, 2013 at 7:52 am

Hi. Have you tried using Smart always on? If so, please compare the speed of always on and unlisurf. I’m more concerned about the speed rather than the amount of data since I use the internet for research and dont download large files or do video streaming. They say that you can access speeds up to 7mbps if you subscribe to always on plans. I just need a consistent 1 mbps speed.

    • Malds 10 April, 2013 at 8:48 am

Sorry Mary, I’ve never tried always on because of the limited data. I like to download torrents and watch movies/documentaries on youtube so I need the uncapped access. I’m guessing always on will probably be similar to the unli plan speedwise. I don’t see any reason why they’d make it different.

Regardless of which one you go for though it should be enough for just research if that’s all you’re after. why don’t you try the 70 MB always on plan and see how fast you go through that. If that one lasts you at least two days then it might be cheaper for you to use that instead of the unli plan.

      • mary anne 10 April, 2013 at 8:53 am

Thanks a lot! I’ll give your suggestion a try.

        • Malds 10 April, 2013 at 9:33 am

Awesome, hope things work out for you :)

  9. calixliam 10 April, 2013 at 1:32 pm

im planning to get a pocket wifi i just dont know which is better? my location is manila (tayuman) im using my samsung tablet for wifi tethering i used sun, smart and globe sim but it seems globe stand out on all sims that i’ve tried..though its slow but not slow compared to sun and smart..i just dont know if it would be different on pocket wifi..naguluhan ako bigla globe or smart based on your write ups ok ung smart..

    • Malds 10 April, 2013 at 2:45 pm

the thing with 3g and 4g kasi is that speed will be dependent on area, so kung maganda globe sa inyo and ok naman sya for you then you might just want to stick with that. For me the distinct advantage ng smart over globe is that it’s uncapped (yung unli promos nila). Pero speedwise, depende din sa lugar mo although in my experience lamang ang smart. Pero ako lang naman yun.If you’ve tested all networks in your area and found na globe yung pinaka ok then just stick to globe.

My suggestion is that you just get your pocket wifi unlocked or get an already unlocked one so you can continue to experiment between the networks. There are unlocked pocket devices naman being sold online like in tipidpc for example (you might be interested in reading if you’ve never used the site before) or sulit. Pero kung gusto mo talaga ng brand new or if your planning to get one with a plan, then just stick to a globe device kasi at least medyo kamapnte ka na dun.

      • calixliam 11 April, 2013 at 4:33 pm

i see..hindi ako kuha ng plan bro bali ung device lang prepaid gamitin ko..un nga rin kasi nasa isip ko bka di ok kapag download ka ng movies using globe pocket wifi..pan uncappaed ba you can download khit ilan GB? sa globe ba naka cap? thanks man..

        • Malds 11 April, 2013 at 4:47 pm

Yung globe bro na supersurf plan caps at 800 mb, and yes pag uncapped ka like what smart has for their unli 50 (equivalent to supersurf50 sa globe) kahit ilang gigs idownload mo ok lang. I was a heavy Globe user before I switched to smart. I used to have 3 globe sims so that when one of em capped I’d just switch to the others, kalokohan lang talaga lol.

Both Smart and Globe don’t have caps tho for their regular rates, yung 20 per hour thing nila. But it’s wayyyyy too expensive to download movies at 20 per hour lol. You’re better of just buying them sa tabi tabi kung ganun lang.

I suggest you shift to smart if you’re planning to do heavy movie downloads, torrent stuff, or kung youtube heavy ka. Or pa unlock mo nalang device mo if you already have one para you can still keep your globe sim.

  10. Ey 10 April, 2013 at 2:55 pm

hi, me and my sister are planning to get a smart pocket wifi plan for 999 a month…We are living in project 8, Q.C… Me and my sister are neighborhood…Do you think it will work out as what the smart ads thru their website regarding the pocket wifi? She has a smart bro prepaid and I have a globe bro prepaid…but the smart bro is better than the globe bro because it has no cap… I just wanna make sure if unlimited is really unlimited and without other charges but a P999? Thanks.

    • Malds 10 April, 2013 at 6:51 pm

hmmm I can’t say for sure since I’m not using their plan but there should still be no cap especially for their subscription plans. You can always clarify this before you get the plan anyway but chances are it’s not going to be capped. There shouldn’t be anything on top of the 999 (there usually isn’t) but I think you still have to pay for the device, I’m not entirely certain about this part since mine was 2nd hand.

Keep in mind though that if you’re planning to share the pocket wifi, the range isn’t as large as advertised if you and your sister are in separate rooms. The wall sort of blocks the signal so if you’re used to wireless broadband, it’s not going to be as powerfull. You’ll have to test this out but on me and my brothers ipads, we have to make sure that my smart device is relatively close to both of us (there’s a small room between his and mine so i usually place it there near the window para malakas signal).

      • Ey 11 April, 2013 at 4:18 pm

just wanna ask do you have any idea between a router and a wifi stick? which one is better? tnx

        • Malds 11 April, 2013 at 4:39 pm

router kung pang family since it’s a lot more powerful coverage wise. Mas malaki range nya but you’d normally have to get a broadband installed to need one.

The wifi stick is portable, and usually it’s good enough for your needs na kahit heavy torrent and youtube person ka like me. So for me, I’d go with the wifi stick because it fits my lifestyle better. The battery issue is a problem with the wifi stick tho since 3 or 4 hours lang lasting power nya pag dirediretchong gamit. But I have a universal usb charger (I think I got it from CDR king) that I carry around with me for my ipad and phone anyway so that’s not an issue for me basta may plug akong mahanap. Or I just hook it up to my laptop whenever I use it outside to keep it fully charged. I always make sure that I keep it fully charged so I can use it whenever I feel like surfing the net when I’m in a car (the stick charges on my brothers car tho coz it has the USB hook for an mp3 player), in a bus, or in some waiting room somewhere.

So portability wise panalo yung wifi stick, you need to make sure the connection in your area is good tho and you need to make up for the battery issue. But if you keep it hooked up to your PC or to a charger while you’re using it like me, this won’t be a problem.

    • Ey 11 April, 2013 at 6:06 pm

my sister decided to get a smart sim plan 999…is it okay if we will just buy a wifi stick to other gadget center or we will just purchase the smart pocket wifi? or do you know a place/person where we can buy 2nd hand? tnx

      • Malds 11 April, 2013 at 6:50 pm

If your looking for second hand Gadgets you can try, thats where i buy most of my stuff. Just make sure that you do some research about the model you want to buy and pick a seller that has a lot of positive feedback.

You might want to check out my post about tpc if you decide to get a second hand one:

You can also go ahead and get it at the smart center tho if you want a brand new one. Mas mahal sya by a couple of hundreds to 1k tho kung sa kanila. Pero at least bago.

        • Malds 11 April, 2013 at 6:51 pm

Oh and you can also buy brand new gadgets at tipidpc, mas mahal lang ng konti pero itll probably still be cheaper than getting the device at smart or some gadget store sa mall.

          • Ey 12 April, 2013 at 9:23 am

Thank you so much..this really make a big help for us…bless you more…

  12. Yawa 13 April, 2013 at 12:11 pm

    • Malds 13 April, 2013 at 1:37 pm

kelangan mo i unlock muna bro. Kung feeling mo kaya mo mag solo, google mo lang sya and magbasabasa ka muna about it.

    • Malds 13 April, 2013 at 1:42 pm

May unlisurf for 1 month promo ba for pocket wifi prepaid? And parang nabasa ko may fair use policy din ang smart or no cap talaga? Smart bro first internet line namin pero nung lumipat kami switched to globe sobrang pangit ng connection at service kasi. Thanks learned a lot from this post tagal ko na nagreresearch about this.

    • Malds 13 April, 2013 at 8:50 pm

Meron, pero di ko pa na try. Pag smart “Unli 1200” sya.

In my case, the most na ginagamit ko for smart one week lang na unli, yung Unli 300 nila. Kasi may days talaga na di ko kelangan yung device ko like pag sa coffee bean ako tumatambay, so di ko kelangan gumastos for internet since may cofee bean card naman ako (free internet). Kaya kahit papana yung monthly cost ko for internet is using my pocket wifi is still less than the monthly fee for a plan. So sulit pa din for me to stay with prepaid internet lang.

      • Michaela 13 April, 2013 at 9:07 pm

Ano po ba marerecomment niyo for pocket wifi device in terms of quality and battery life, the one from smart or from sa mga sites like tipid and sulit? Thanks!

        • Malds 13 April, 2013 at 9:30 pm

Kung yung device habol mo, the one you’ll find in tipid and sulit are pretty much the same as the ones being sold by smart. You’ll find some of the newer models on tipidpc though, kasi may mga models na ini-import ng sellers na wala si Smart. sensya ne pero I don’t know the model numbers ng mga bagong labas lol.

Pero quality wise they’re not much different kasi given the speeds possible sa atin (and this is just my presumption, di naman ako expert sa mga ganito), yung bottlneck ng speed kasi nanggagaling sa networks and yung technology available on their end, hindi sa devices.

Pag basahin mo specs nila sasabihin 5 mb or 7 or 20+ mb kaya, which is technically true.

In my opinion, parepareho lang talaga yung gma devices ngayon. Kasi I’ve tried both ZTE and huawei (mine and my friends) and speed wise pareho lang yung na proprovide nila. Battery wise naman, most of the ones available in the market will run out of power after 3 or 4 hours of constant use talaga. There are some devices na aabot ka ng 5 or 6 hours of constant use pero sobrang mahal na nya, cguro nasa 7-9K presyo na sya. Hindi worth it for the extra 2 hours.

Advice ko nalang is that you buy a portable USB charger (CDR king) anda long USB cable. That way it’ll never run out of battery.

I can’t give you a specific model kasi I haven’t tried all of them and di na ako updated, basta make sure lang na if you’re getting them from sulit or tipidpc, you buy the ones na 4g capable (para future proof, pag dumami na yung mga areas na may 4g kasi ngayon iilan lang sa Manila area ang meron) and na openline na (in case you decide to use another network pag mahina pa din smart sa inyo).

You can get yours from smart din namna, pero ipapaopenline mo pa sya. So it’s up to you where you wanna get yours.

If it were me though I’d probably just look for an already open one from tipidpc.

          • Michaela 13 April, 2013 at 9:55 pm

I’ll probably get one from smart instead mas convenient kasi sakin. Thank you finally may reliable infos na kong nakuha iba iba kasi sinasabi sa service center at sa web. Kailangan ko nalang itest smart signal dito samin. So smart pocket wifi plus portable usb charger and i’m good to go. Natapos din walang katapusan kong pag iinquire thank you so much!!!

          • Malds 14 April, 2013 at 1:23 am

haha glad I was able to help. I can relate to the “walang katapusan na pag iinquire”. Hope smart works for you.

          • Michaela 14 April, 2013 at 7:24 pm

:( Pero yung flyer naman na kinuha ko nakalagay for pocket wifi “Do heavy duty internet jobs like video calls, HD video streaming, and fast downloads and uploads. That’s because Smart Bro gives you bigger bandwidth, powered by Smart’s fiber optic network that stretches all across the country.”

          • Malds 14 April, 2013 at 8:26 pm

di ko gets, 1.5gb yung cap? plan ba to? parang malabo ata lol. Kasi I’m sure di to yung prepaid kasi palagi ako gumagamit nun and I go well beyond that, minsan in one day lang.

          • Michaela 15 April, 2013 at 12:58 pm

Sige try ko po sa ibang branch. Feeling ko din walang cap or kung meron man malaki dahil
yun yung inaadvertise nila ngayon “heavy duty internet jobs” kaya daw. Thank you again sorry kulit haha.

          • Malds 15 April, 2013 at 1:37 pm

Oks good luck and ayos lang na kulitin mo ako lol, summer ngayon kaya madami akong oras haha. Pero seriously, I weirdly enjoy replying to comments on my blog lol so it’s not a bother ;).

  15. LynnGene 15 April, 2013 at 1:39 pm

Hello po Kuya. I was planning to buy pocket wifi ng smart. I saw your blog and decided to ask you some questions. I was using Globe super stick and always unlisurfing for 50. Kaso yung “superunli” nila di naman nagtatagal. Andto pa naman ako sa province. (candon city) And Kuya. Loloadan mo po ba yung pocket wifi?? Pag prepaid?? I tought kasi pag wifi wala ng babayaran. Yung device lang. What is better po kuya?? Im choosing with this 3 products. Pcket wifi , Wifi plug it , Rocket wifi. Thanks po Kuya. Illwait for your responce. ^_^

    • Malds 15 April, 2013 at 1:56 pm

So I don’t know if smart or globe is better at your place, you need to test it.

Yung distinct advantage lang ng smart over globe kasi is if you’re a heavy user, hindi sya nag cacap ng 800mb like globe. Yung unlisurf equivalent ng smart yun, walang data limit. Di ka matatangap ng “you have reached your daily limit blah blah blah”.

Re your next question, Yes lo-loadan mo ang pocket wifi. Same concept sya with the pocket wifi.

What’s better between pocket wifi, plug it, and rocket? depende sa needs mo lol. I don’t really know kung ano gagamitan mo or kung ikaw lang ang gumagamit or if you need to share it. Yun kasi yung mga magiging consideration mo plus yung price. Speedwise kasi mag papare-pareho lang yan.

Pero personal opinion ko, based on my needs to though hehe:

wifi plug it – wag mo kunin kasi kelangan nakasalpak sya sa laptop/pc para gumana. So kung naka ipad ka or something, di mo magagamit.
Pocket wifi – is what I’m using so good ako dito. mga 4 hours battery life sya pero pwede mo naman kasi i plug lang sa usb charger or sa pc mo para palagi syang nag chacharge and di mag lowbat.

So yun hehe hope that helps you decide :)

      • Malds 15 April, 2013 at 2:01 pm

correction sa wifi plug it hehe, pwede pala ata sya gumana kahit walang pc/laptop basta naka saksak sya sa usb adapter/charger. So basically wala ata tong battery, kelangan naka saksak sya para gumana.

  16. vonpadilla 16 April, 2013 at 1:45 pm

Greetings Sir Malds! Im planning on subscribing to Smart Pocket Wifi for my laptop and phone. I Just want to ask you regarding Smart Pocket Wifi performance using torrents? do you get decent download speeds and does Smart has torrent download limit/capped? Thank you!

    • Malds 16 April, 2013 at 1:57 pm

Hey Von, I use my smart for torrents all the time. But take note though that I’m not a plan user. I only get the daily/weekly unlis. Mabilis naman sya sa area ko. I can download series episodes in an hour or two, minsan 30-45 minutes pa. But it fluctuates and it’s usually fast at night. I don’t download stuff during the day so I’m not sure how fast it is pag regular hours, but I think it’s slower.

I have read somewhere that they cap the maximum speed for torrent downloads though. I’m not sure if it’s across the board for all smart connections or if it’s for plans only. By “cap” I don’t mean that they limit your maximum download. What I meant is that they don’t let you go above a certain speed when it comes to torrents.

There’s a really long forum over at tipidpc about subscriber speed ng plan users for smart. I live and hangout sa area na yun so dun nanggagaling experience ko.

Sa gabi ok speed nya sa torrent, but again this is for the prepaid one. Imguessing it’s probably the same for the plan but I’ve never used it so I don’t want to say that it’ll be the same for you.

Test it out for a day or two in your area before you decide.

Hello po. Di ko po alam kung ano kukunin ko for my mobile, SMART OR GLOBE?

I usually go to cities and my dsl and wifi po kami dito but sometimes it gets disconnected

If GLOBE —– mahina sa bahay pero kapag nasa cities mabilis but kapag pupunta kami sa manila ( which is madalas) super slow.

If SMART —— I get descent speeds everywhere ( not so fast, not so slow)

    so pls help me choose…..
    PS I live in Pangasinan

    • Malds 18 April, 2013 at 4:01 pm

And pretty much all my friends are globe so globe palagi kong kinukuha.

I always make sure that all my devices (phone, usb and pocket wifi) are unlocked so I never have to pick a network lol. Gagastos ka lang ng mga 500 pesos para magpaunlock and then bili ka ng extra sim sa kabilang network.

      • Lance Tan 18 April, 2013 at 7:56 pm

Im always around the city. so any suggestion about that.

        and what’s better:
Using your phone for internet or just getting a pocket wifi?

        tnx 😀

        • Malds 18 April, 2013 at 8:29 pm

hmmm kaw lang I suppose :). If ok lang sayo na may cap 800 mb daily for the speed (assuming di to plan) then go for globe. In my case I like to always use smart kasi sa area ko it’s fast. If mas ok Globe for your purposes then globe ka nalang.

Re phone vs pocket wifi question, I’m assuming this is a tethering question since you’re comparing it with a pocket wifi. if your phone can tether then you “might” not need a pocket wifi kas medyo pareho lang naman din but it still depends on your day to day activities.

Ako kasi my phone cant tether and I carry an ipad and laptop with me all the time so I need a separate device, so pocket wifi talaga ako. Plus malakas kumain ng batery yung tether so I’d rather have a dedicated device na pang internet lang talaga.

Ok lang mag tether if you’re always in a place where you can plug your phone para macharge mo habang ginagawa mong hotspot sya, but if you’re always moving about or if you use your phone as a hot spot while traveling, baka maubusan ka ng bat which is really bad if you need to stay connected through text/call.

If you’re thinking naman of just browsing the net through a smart phone then there’s nothing wrong with that. If that’s all you need it for and kontento ka na sa smart phone then yun nalang. Makak mura ka pa kasi you won’t need to buy pocket wifi.

In my case kasi I need the internet for my ipad and laptop for blogging/work/school. Kahit nga ipad medyo kinukulang sa needs ko so I need to bust out my laptop all the time.

So yun, I can’t answer your question, medyo ikaw lang talaga makakasagot dyan lol :).

          • Lance Tan 18 April, 2013 at 8:47 pm

            ok po. tnx

          • Malds 18 April, 2013 at 8:56 pm

Good luck sa pag pili :)

  19. User 99 19 April, 2013 at 10:51 am

Ty

    • Malds 19 April, 2013 at 11:12 am

      • User 99 19 April, 2013 at 11:44 am

So yung smart bro sim ba same din sa nasa loob ng smart pocket wifi? & wala ding cap? Para itest ko lang din. Sensya wla ako masyado alam dto

        • Malds 20 April, 2013 at 1:04 am

basta smart sim whether usb or pocket wifi walang cap.

  20. Tracy 22 April, 2013 at 8:47 pm

Hi Malds, I purchased Roket wifi after using Pocket wifi for a while. But I noticed that there is no difference in speed between Roket wifi and Poket wifi. I tried to check the speed by using them in the same location. I always subscribe Unlisurf. Can Always On give me faster speed than Unlisurf? Or it really doesn’t matter what plan you subscribe? Please kindly advise me :) Thanks!

    • Malds 23 April, 2013 at 12:26 am

Hmmm this is just my opinion but you’re prolly not using 4g. Your area might not have it. In that case if you’re just on 3g then whether you use your pocket wifi device or your rocket wifi, the speed of your internet wont change. Basically both devices can give you speeds faster than your network can. So you dont see a boost.

Its like you have 2 cars, one (rocket wifi) faster than the other (the normal one) but both stuck in traffic (i think i used this example in an earlier comment lol). Both cars can go faster than the speed the traffic is moving (network speed here) but they cant utilize their best speed because movement is limited on a congested road. So at the end of the day, it doesnt matter how fast your car is, as long as its at about the same speed of daily traffic it’s good enough.

4g is sort of like the the skyway lol. You dont have it everywhere but you can go really fast when you’re on there. Might still not allow you to reach the top speed of your device but at least its better than 3g. Check mo muna sa internet yung 4g locations and if your place has it.

Let me knnow if that makes sense lol.

And i dont think going always on will make a difference. Mas sulit yung unlisurf anyway.

  21. thnets 24 April, 2013 at 9:12 am

hi po tanong lang sana ako im using now plan 999 sa smart per month tapos parang nabigatan na ako gusto ng sis ko na magshare kami may wifi ho ba ang smart anong dapat ko gamitin para maka share sya ng net sa akin were neighbors lng kasi

    • Malds 24 April, 2013 at 11:09 am

Or try mo mag inquire sa smart center about their “share it” modem. Meron silang binebenta din ata na wifi modem na para sa smart broadband din talaga, a lot bigger than the pocket wifi. Eto link oh, Tanongin mo nalang magkano kelangan mo bayaran for the device since meron ka naman din nang plan sa kanila.

  22. Mark 24 April, 2013 at 10:30 am

I just want to ask if smart pocket wifi unlisurt promo works on ym or skype video chat? Thank you

    • Malds 24 April, 2013 at 10:57 am

Hey mark, it works on anything that uses the internet so yes :)

      • Mark 24 April, 2013 at 11:36 am

Thanks for the quick reply I appreciate it.

  23. Jon Junio 26 April, 2013 at 4:03 pm

I just bought a pocket wifi from smart yesterday. It promises speed of up to 7.2 mbps. It’s prepaid like yours but I seem to have a cap on my torrent download speed. I can’t reach more than 17 mbps on any of my downloads. I do know how torrents work. I know that you need a lot of seeders and a few leechers. I’ve done every trick in the book to make my DL speed fast but to no avail. On the other hand, my apps download and browsing speed is quick as lightning. Signal is good here in sampaloc manila and I’m getting a 3g+. Why can’t I download torrents like you???

    • Jon Junio 26 April, 2013 at 4:05 pm

      That’s 17 kbps i’m sorry.

    • Malds 26 April, 2013 at 6:10 pm

Hmmm since you just got it yesterday why don’t you give it a couple more days. Speed on 3g whichever network you’re on isn’t consistent. I also get days when it’s unbearably slow. And try doing your torrent downloads at night, 12 midnight onwards. That’s usually the fastest for me.

Also re torrent’s, always pick the one with the most seeders and the fewest leachers. I always go for ratio over number. For example I’d pick a 200 seeders/20 leachers file over a 2000 seeders/1500 leachers one.

      • Jon Junio 26 April, 2013 at 11:44 pm

Yes, I always try to DL torrents at night. I even stayed until 3 am last night so I could check the rate but it stays the same. Not to brag or anything but i consider myself a veteran with torrents so I know how to get the optimal speed for a download. Hehe. Btw, do you plug your pocket wifi to your laptop while downloading? Because i have mine placed by the window so i could get better signal .Maybe I’ll just give it a few days. I hope my speed gets better. I really love my HD movies from torrents.

        • Malds 27 April, 2013 at 6:17 pm

hmm i dunno why it’s not speeding up for you. Yeah just give it a couple days more and see if it changes for the better.

And ako I have separate charger for it that you can plug to a normal socket so I plug it sa may window and leave the unit outside hanging lol. Gets better signal that way nga.

          • robeee 6 July, 2013 at 1:12 pm

hi, just wnna ask. when you plug it directly sa socket, di naman nasisira yung device?

          • Malds 7 July, 2013 at 10:03 am

Hey Robee, depende sa charger mo. I use a universal charger kasi and output nya is about the same as USB power so hindi nman sya masisisira. Most usb chargers will probably work tho, ang alam ko lang na medyo delikado siguro is yung charger ng ipad na bago. Yung fast charger. Medyo mas mataas ata output nun so even tho I’m not completely sure if masisira pocket wifi ko if i charge it with that, di ko na inaatempt just to be safe.

Yung rule with charging stuff usually is that you can go below the required power, mabagal lang, but try not to use chargers na mas mataas output power. Although I did read somewhere that for modern phones, tablets, cameras, etc… kahit yung higher powered socket chargers will still work for them, mas mabilis lang mag charge. I’ve never tried it tho.

In my case pala I use a spare motorola charger that I just found lying around at home. It’s output is 5 volts — 550mA, yun yung standard output level ata ng USB 2.

  24. eXile 26 April, 2013 at 6:18 pm

Hi there, just like to share my experience.
Having an experience like yours with the good wired internet connection but you know what happened blah blah blah.
But let’s cut the chase, when I used globe tattoo and ESPECIALLY Sun broadband, speeds were just.. how do I say it.. UTTER CRAP. I can’t believe they would even market this, robbing many people of their hard earned money. I would pay P100+ (which is a substantial amount of money as a college student ) every 3 days only to get 10 KILOBYTES PER SECOND, and it isn’t even stable (constant drops to zero and it would take me 20 MINUTES to download 6mb song). It would take forever to load pages and get work done. Watching youtube videos and torrenting is but a dream. I would cuss more than I get stuff done.

BUT, after trying the last broadband option (which I thought was the worst according to colleagues), and boy was I wrong, it just changed everything I thought about broadband connections here. It hit stable speeds of 1.5-3mbps during peak hours and would go 5++mbps during early morning. PLUS, there was no data cap crap whatsoever, so I can download/torrent things I wanted without waiting very long. Hell, I could even play online games with acceptable pings during off-peak hours. Pretty amazing for a broadband stick.

So thank you Smart for actually getting internet service done right and thank you sir Malds for sharing your experiences too.

    • Malds 26 April, 2013 at 6:24 pm

lol yes I went through pretty much the same thing. I tried both smart and globe before I switched to smart. Globe isn’t too bad in my area tho, I actually had decent speeds but their data cap thingy just sucked way too much.

So Smart user din ako all the way na ngayon.

Thanks for dropping by my blog and sharing your experience (rant lol) eXile :).

  26. j 28 April, 2013 at 7:09 pm

simple question: using a pocket wifi and rocket wifi simultaneously beside each other via separate laptops but homing on the same BTS (cellsite) which has 4G capability – will the rocket wifi provide more speed than the pocket wifi. if yes, what are the actual/test speeds? would like to know – will the rocket wifi always be double the speed of the pocket wifi? eg 2mbps vs 1mbps or 4mbps vs 2mbps?

    • Malds 29 April, 2013 at 12:47 am

Hi J, I’ve never actually done a side by side comparison. I’ve used both 4g and 3g separately for Smart and globe tho so I might be able to ad a bit of insight albeit an incomplete one.

Actual speeds will depend on your area, but for mine I think the fastest I ever got for 4g was around 4 nearing 5 mbps. It was fluctuating though and it’s not consistent. that’s just the highest number I saw, I didn’t look at the numbers the whole time I was using it since I only check the speed of my connection in the beginning or when it’s really really slow. So I don’t know if I’ve ever gone above those numbers.

For 3g it’s usually 1mb or less in my area. I can sometimes go over 1mb but not all the time. I hit like .4-.8 mb on the regular. Not uber fast but good enough for my needs (I stream 240 and 360 youtube vids just fine).

But theoretically if you do a side by side comparison, 4g connection should be substantially faster than the 3g one. It’s not going to always be double the speed though, I mean it’s possible you may even go above double the 3g speed but whether you’re on 4g or 3g, speed always fluctuates. So it’s not going to be twice the speed consistently.

All I can say is that from my experience, 4g has always been substantially faster than 3g. I just can’t say exactly by how much.

Hi Malds, just want to ask, does pocket wifi works po ba sa matatas na area? Im leaving po kc sa condo, and nasa 20th flr po ako, what do you suggest po na pwedent gamitin? I live sa may ermita mla.

    • Malds 2 May, 2013 at 11:05 am

Oo naman lol it’ll work anywhere na may signal. I live in Paco actually, lapit lang sa rob ermita. And if your place is near roxas, medyo ok dapat speed ng Smart dyan. I hang out a lot kasi sa UN sbux, nasa service road ng roxas, and ok speed ng smart dun. I’ve also tried sa my pedro gil sbux and mabilis naman din smart dun, so I’m sure ok din sa ermita are yan.

  28. Aaron 4 May, 2013 at 11:12 pm

Anyway, I agree with you, Smart is the better choice. Widest coverage pa kahit saan may 3G at nationwide na ang LTE. Globe napakabagal ng modernization samantalang mas maliit yung upgrade nila.

    • Malds 5 May, 2013 at 9:39 am

mababa naman talga ata yung torrent speed vs browsing speed talaga, nakacap nga yung torrent kasi nila talaga pero at least pwede pa din naman for my needs so oks lang ako dun.

      • Again 9 May, 2013 at 4:29 pm

May nababasa akong tweets nakakapagdownload sila up to 2MB (not Megabits) sa torrent. I think kapag prepaid lang yun. Correct me if I’m wrong, though.

        • Malds 9 May, 2013 at 6:19 pm

I dunno, never tried postpaid torrent downloads. Usually nasa 40-80 kB/s sya nag rarange on a fast night. That’s around 600 something kbps ata after after conversion.

So baka throttled (thank you for reminding me of the term lol I always forget this one) to 600-700 kbps ang torrent downloads sa 3g.

          • Again 9 May, 2013 at 6:48 pm

          • Malds 9 May, 2013 at 7:47 pm

Onga sana nga lumawak pa coverage ng hspa+ (lol kala ko may hsdpa, wala palang “d” hehe). Medy kulang pa din sakun ang 3g speeds minsan, lalo na during the day when it’s slowest for me.

Might try LTE sometime soon. Was just reading about smarts plans kanina. Kaso may limit nga yung available plans and you have to pay for extra pagmaabot mo na. Kahit yung pinakamahal nilang broadband plan hanggang 21GB lang per month. Medyo malakas panaman ako mag torrent lol.

  29. Jeff 5 May, 2013 at 8:55 pm

Hi po sir. Question lang.

anyway, nainis ako sa very thought of capping since heavy downloader talaga ako sa mga torrents. So inisip ko magsearch ng services ng smart and i stumbled upon your blog and read na no cap talaga ang smart? is this only true sa prepaid?

    • Malds 6 May, 2013 at 1:28 pm

Hey Jeff I cant answer all of your questions with certainty pero subukan ko pa din.

1.) I’ve never tried postpaid ng globe pero sabi ng friends ko who are using it di pa naman daw sila nakakaexperience ng cap sa postpaid.

Mabilis pa din naman relatively, pero it’ll be a lot slower ng than regular browsing and streaming speeds mo.

3.) Re rocket wifi to LTE question, I’m not sure about this one be honest. You might have to ask your network provider about this. It’s more like an upgrade of 3G so parang 3.5G lang talaga na network sya. It can get close to 4G speeds tho pero it’s a different network to 4G LTE. So baka hindi. You might have to get another device para maka LTE ka in the future.

4.) Sa tipidpc ok naman goods dun, just make sure you read my post about tipidpc para mapili mo yung ok na sellers. So mas mababa lagi yung naoofer nila na prices. For example I recently bought a camera sa tipidpc for 15K na nagreretail ng around 20 sa mall. May waranty and brand new. You can always get cheaper stuff online if you know where to look :).

      • Jeff 6 May, 2013 at 8:43 pm

ah ok.

        • Malds 7 May, 2013 at 12:12 am

hmmm sorry bro, never really tried gaming on 3g/4g so I don’t know how well they’d do. Well I did try that game online that’s really similar to DOTA for a while, can’t remember what it was called lol. The one where you have to buy characters otherwise you can only use the ones that are unlocked for that week.

May times na smooth ang gameplay pero from time to time mag spipike sya then it’ll go back to normal. Di sya consistently smooth. Pero this was last year pa so I don’t know if the network has gotten better.

    • Potpot 9 May, 2013 at 6:59 pm

      • Malds 9 May, 2013 at 7:50 pm

yeah hassle nga yung setup ng LTE, currently mas sulit yung HSPA+ sakin dahil at least unli sya talaga.

Highest latency ko ata na nakuha 148 ms if I’m not mistaking. Pero usually it’s much higher. I think I clocked that low lang, sa umaga ata yun nung gumising ako.

  30. RJ 10 May, 2013 at 2:01 pm

Hi kuya malds. Thank you in advance.

    • Malds 10 May, 2013 at 3:45 pm

      unlisurf 50 (1 day)
      unlisurf 80 (2 days)
      unlisurf 200 (5 days)+

      Just send it to 2200.

      • RJ 10 May, 2013 at 4:15 pm

Ty :)

        • Malds 10 May, 2013 at 5:14 pm

And I’m not sure kung anong promo yung may 50 hours in one month, sorry.

  31. Kenster 12 May, 2013 at 5:08 am

Hi Sir Malds.

    • Malds 12 May, 2013 at 6:38 am

Hey kenster, yung pocket wifi hanggang 3g lang sya so mas mabagal sya sa 4g LTE. Yung 4g LTE, yun yung tunay na 4g network talaga. Medyo malayo speeds nilang dilawa. Masmabilis talaga ang 4g LTE.

Yung nakaklito siguro is that for some devices, even before 4g LTE came out, sinasabi nila na 4g na din sya. This would be the ones na may HSDPA+ (rocket plug it & wifi for example). That one isn’t actually real 4g (at least that’s what most people are saying), parang upgrade lang sya ng 3g kaya masmabilis sya. Pero it’s still slower than 4g LTE.

So isipin mo nalang sa pinas ngayon yung networks merong:

      2g – pinakamabagal
3g – yung normal na nasasagap mo using your typical usb dongle or pocketwifi
4g LTE – yung pinaka mabilis, pinaka recent, and pinaka mahal lol. Ibang network to sa 4g hsdpa+ so kung may rocket wifi ka, di ka pa rin makakaconnect dito. Kelangan mo ng LTE device talaga.

  32. Alex Racho 12 May, 2013 at 7:54 am

Thank you for all the useful info on this thread. I will get my first dual sim phone next week, and am already frustrated with Globe service (sa call/text/internet). Mama unlisurf pa nga ako P999. But really slow. So planning to get Smart prepaid sim and load with unli plans. Do these plans also come with free texts/calls? I’m also assuming I can share my internet connection like hotspot from 2nd sim, while I continue cell connectivity with Globe.

    • Malds 12 May, 2013 at 11:13 am

hey alex I’m not sure dun sa free text/calls thing hehe. And making it a hotspot while till using your globe number is a feature dependent on your phone I think so you’ll have to check with the one you use.

  33. theArchitect 13 May, 2013 at 12:46 am

sir, tanong ko lang. kakabili ko lang kasi ng smart pocket wifi kanina. always bang 3g lang ang nakalagay sa device?? and nag speedtest ako hindi ako tumataas ng kahit 1mbps. ang sabi nila eh up to 7.2mbps at ang minimum naman nila eh 1.5mbps. by the way sir sampaloc, manila ang location ko. thanks sir! more power!

    • Malds 13 May, 2013 at 9:26 am

So med

  34. Arn Joseph Vergara 13 May, 2013 at 6:04 pm

    • Malds 13 May, 2013 at 6:17 pm

sorry bro, unless subukan mo talaga yung smart tas globe sa area mo di mo malalaman kung mabilis or not. I suggest i unlock mo sun broadband mo, bili ka ng smart tas globe na sim card tas try mo maglaro using both. Kaw mag decide kung ano mabilis sa area nyo. gastos ka total mga 700-800 lang cguro for the unlocking and sim cards.

And re pocket wifi, di bibilis speed ng connection mo kahit mag pocket wifi ka. Pareho pa din sa stick yan. The only way bibilis speed mo is kung:

1.) may hsdpa+ sa area mo and bumili ka ng device na may hsdpa+ (rocket plug it/wifi for example)
2.) or bumili ka ng 4G LTE device.

Pero between a normal 3g usb device and a normal pocket wifi device, wala masyadong difference sa speed yan.

  35. ecmac 15 May, 2013 at 2:05 am

Hi, I noticed you’d reply to everyone…so i’ll have my share.
I use prepaid witribe at this time and i can’t download torrents but it does give me decent speed in browsing and buffering and steaming you tube vids (more on buffering) ugh! i believe this is a 4g network also known as LTE? correct me if im wrong. i took chance on wi-shit, but before that, i went to smart center to inquire about LTE, it was new then, and i was disappointed to hear from them that it might not work when using in an elevation that is higher than 12th floor. i live in 35 floor. i decided to get wi-shit because i had no other option, pldt run out of port etc. Now, i want a pocket wi-fi for my ipad and to get rid of wires. choosing between the non-LTE or the LTE thing. which one should i get? taking into consideration that im getting 2g smart signal in my unit, sometimes 3g, i bought a bro sim to check using my phone. i though they’re stronger than wi-shit based on company profile alone. but why am i not getting smart lte signal while i can get wi-shit signal here in Ermita-UN ave.(a listed lte area for smart)
    Thanks for this blog!
    to LTE or not LTE?

    • Malds 15 May, 2013 at 11:30 am

hmmm tough problem. You sure your phone can connect to LTE? Might be the reason why you cant find smart’s lte in your area. Maybe you could find someone who has a smart lte pocket wifi and test it out at your place just to be sure. if it works then go for LTE. Be sure to check out their plan details tho. I could be wrong but I remember reading that they place a bandwidth cap on LTE plans and you need to pay extra if you want it expanded. That’s not an issue for most people but if you’re a heavy torrent user you won’t like this.

If you really don’t have LTE in your area, I think the decision will depend on how much you’ll be using the device outside your condo and where. If you hang around all the time at an LTE area for work or whatever, then still get an LTE. Otherwise just get a normal 3g or maybe an HSDPA+ one (rocket wifi). Then if smart ever upgrades its network in a couple of years and you finally get lte coverage then you can switch to an LTE device. They’ll be really cheap by then.

From your story, 3g isn’t even that strong in your condo so LTE might be hopeless at this point in time tho. There might not be much point in paying extra for the LTE feature if all it’s ever going to connect to at your place is 3g.

I hang out a lot in UN bux (shouldn’t be too far from your place) and 3g speeds there is pretty good. torrent downloads speeds range from 50-100 KB/s, I can load youtube just fine, and this recent Monday (election) I did a speed test at 3.5MB there. My torrent speed for a movie i downloaded on that day was an insane 500KB/s lol. That was just a fluke I’m guessing but my point is that you might be comfy already with just normal 3g.

Try switching the sim on your phone again and running and see how fast it is at your place. Make sure you’re on 3g tho and not 2g. You might want to run the test in your balcony or at an open window.

What I do is I always place my device outside the window. I have a long wall charger for it and I just hang it outside the metal railing so it gets better coverage.

  36. Izza 16 May, 2013 at 3:24 pm

Hi! :) And di ba wala naman limit yun? Hoping for your response. Thanks! :)

    • Malds 17 May, 2013 at 1:38 pm

      Hey izza :)

1.) yup pareho lang yung speed nyan malamang ng smart usb and pocket wifi as long as parehong level sila ng network. Kasi kung may hsdpa+ (rocket wifi) sa inyo or LTE 4g then syempre yung device na capable nun will be faster than your regular 3g usb dongle.

3.) And finally I cant give advice on an alternative network kasi di ako nakapag test sa inyo, pero sabi mo naman ok na speeds ng smart so siguro sage choice na sya. Sa device naman, check mo muna kung may hsdpa+ sa area nyo (rocket plug it or rocket wifi) kasi mas mabilis yun sa normal 3g. So kung meron nga, I suggest yun yung kunin mo wag yung normal 3g device lang.

  38. jor 17 May, 2013 at 1:09 pm

I have smartbro hotspot wifi & it sucks in Ortigas Center & in Quezon City. I can’t download torrents anywhere. Period. Don’t get smartbro if you want to download torrents and don’t get smartbro if you live in Ortigas Center & QC. Also, stick to prepaid. Postpaid is terrible and you’re locked in for two years.

    • Malds 17 May, 2013 at 1:29 pm

sorry to here that it’s not working out for you Jor. Maybe smart smart network just isn’t good in your area. It’s fine in mine tho. In fact I just finished downloading an almost 2 gig file download overnight with it. I really think that it depends your area whether or not you’ll like a particular network. I mean I really like smart because of its real unlimited surfing but I still use globe tho and speeds are ok as well. I switch out my smart sim whenever connection is bad where ever I am.

  39. Agnell Maagad 20 May, 2013 at 7:33 am

Thanks for the links regarding the LTE sites. Unfortunately, PLDC now owns SmartBro and has implemented the so-called “Fair Usage Policy” in April.

Take note: “Upon reaching the optimum volume allocation for a single user, the subscriber will still be able to enjoy unlimited access to the Internet, but at a lower speed.” – WTF?! No notifications. The customer service thought it was just a technical glitch with updrages done by PLDC. And after more than a week of frequent complaining to the CS, they finally notified us with this FUP shit. They said that the basic plan has only 15Gbs cap of data transfer. But if you’re a heavy net user, youtube palang with all its HD videos, I’m sure cap kana within just a week. If you’re a freelancer and you hit the cap, you’re gonna loose a lot all thanks to PLDT/SMART/SUN shitty FUP.

    Here’s the notice from PLDC:

And here’s the page where everyone is ranting off. Sign the protest. Especially if have been loyal to Smart for years.

    • Malds 20 May, 2013 at 10:29 am

Thanks for letting us know Agnell. I’ve read about this but I wasn’t absolutely sure about how the data limiting worked sa LTE, so it’s good that you confirmed it. Pero mukhang yung fair use policy might apply to all all their networks ata, hindi LTE lang. So baka nga binabagalan na nila ung data usage kahit normal 3g ka or hsdpa+. Subukan ko nga later since I have something big to download overnight.

  40. Scruffs 20 May, 2013 at 8:45 am

Hi Sir, how about the Sun Broadband stick, did you tried it?

    • Malds 20 May, 2013 at 10:22 am

Hey scruffs, yup I’ve tried it pero tagal na kasi. Ok naman din ata sya pero I cant remmember that much detail about it. Mga 3 years na din kasi ata since I used sun. Plus since I go out of town a lot, I ended up trading my sun sim for smart and globe since mas may coverage sila outside of manila.

  41. joeydragonlady 21 May, 2013 at 10:21 pm

hi, do I need to use a globe Tatoo sim for my pocket wifi or a Smartbro sim and not a regular sim? I was told it would be faster if I use a Tatoo or a Smartbro sim on my pocket wifi. Thank you for all your information.

    • Malds 22 May, 2013 at 12:51 am

Hey Joey, as far as I know speed shouldn’t change too much whether you use the normal sim or the globe tattoo one. I think both sims are the same kind, there’s just the “globe tattoo” print on one sim and non on the other. This is just from my observation tho since I’ve used a tattoo sim and my own regular one whenever I reached the 800mb cap. I used to switch through 3 globe sim cards before. I didn’t notice a speed difference.

      • joeydragonlady 22 May, 2013 at 5:51 am

But what about the smart buddy and Smartbro? Is there a difference there as well? I plan on just using a prepaid card when I travel. Since I was given a open line pocket wifi as a gift yesterday. Thanks!

        • Malds 22 May, 2013 at 10:01 am

As far as I know there shouldn’t be a difference as well but I haven’t been able to test this as much. I’m just making assumptions based on what would make sense to me.

I don’t think there’d be any point in differentiating the dongle/pocketwifi cards and the ones for phones. Smart phones now have internet and hotspot capabilities so it wouldn’t make that much sense if they they made one slower/faster than the other.

It’d be different for simcards with plans tho since there are different data plans, but for your regular prepaid simcard I don’t think there’ll be any speed difference.

Thank you Malds for answering my questions am testing my Huewei pocket wifi for 3 days on Smartbro and 3 on Globe. Sun cellular has no service in Antipolo perhaps when I go to Nueva Vizcaya I can test it there.

          • Malds 22 May, 2013 at 1:14 pm

awesome,it’s always better to do your own testing. If you have the time later on, I’m sure the readers here would love to hear the results of your tests :). So feel free to drop by again when you can.

Hello Malds. I have a problem. We want to apply for the Smart pocket wifi postpaid since smart ang malakas na signal dito sa area namin and since magpapadisconnect na kami sa digitel broadband dahil papangit na ng papangit service nila dahil din siguro magshushutdown na sila. I just want to ask kung ok lang ba na pocket wifi lang ang gamitin namin all day dito sa bahay? All day, as in 24 hrs. And it turned out good. Thanks for answering. :)

    • Malds 22 May, 2013 at 10:07 am

Should be fine. I use my pocketwifi pretty much all the time. Di naman 24/7 pero minsan 2 or 3 days straight di ko sya ino-off. Pero you’ll need to buy a usb charger. Any generic usb charger na pwede mo iplug sa outlet will do. That way palaging naka charge sya.

I do experience some problems from time to time. Parang hard shutdown. Pag naghahang kasi di nagumaganna yung buttons so kelangan tanggalin yung battery para mareset yung device.

Magiging problema mo is coverage.

  43. Ken 22 May, 2013 at 11:22 pm

hi malds, i have a lot of questions regarding smart bro rocket plug it. i want to know more of this, do u have skype or email chat? i want to ask directly from you. i prefer asking with you than the smart representatives. thanks and God bless!

    • Malds 23 May, 2013 at 5:23 pm

Hey ken, I can’t promise that I’ll be able to answer all your questions since I’m also just a user but I’ll try. Just hit the contact me button on the side and send me a message. That’ll go to my gmail and I can reply there.

  44. zyra 24 May, 2013 at 10:33 pm

    • Malds 27 May, 2013 at 12:05 pm

Hey Zyra, may chance naman yan sure pero just because full bars yung smart sa inyo it doesn’t necessarily mean na magiging mabilis yung connection. There’s a better chance of that happening but it’s never a sure thing. Best thing to do is always test it out first. Kasi I’ve been in some areas that I get full smart bars but connection is slow.

  45. James 26 May, 2013 at 5:39 pm

Hi. Nag-try ako ng smart unli-surf 50 using my iPhone 4, then shared the connection to my PC, intermittent ang connection may time na mabilis pero mas madalas mabagal either sa PC or on my mobile phone.

Thanks for posting the article malaking tulong to.

    • Malds 27 May, 2013 at 12:04 pm

Hey james, kung ganun experience m sa phone it’s either it was a bad day for the network lol (this happens to all networks, there will always be times na pangit yung connection) or your area might not be the best for smart users. Try using globe and see how fast it is.

Re usb dongle, I think there isn’t that much difference in speeds between mobile and usb dongle. I mean there might be a difference but it’s prolly not drastic enough to conclude that you’d get a lot better speeds just by using a usb/pocket wifi. Kung ano speed mo sa iphone mo when you test it out is prolly your regular speed sa area mo.

These are just my opinions based on what you said tho. You might want to test it out for a couple more days at different time intervals (umaga, gabi, hapon, madaling araw, etc…) to get a better assessment of smart connection in your area.-+

  46. sam 30 May, 2013 at 2:26 am

    Hi Malds,
Globe in my area(proj4 cubao, near katipunan already) is really weird. A brief story before I ask for my “ultimate question” haha
I have been using SUN unli promos for months now. It sucks in the morning as in 0-10kbps lang nakukuha ko and the thing I like about it is that I leave my torrent open from 2-6am and once I wake up i see 4-6 episodes ready for my viewing pleasure the next day YAY haha then recently I noticed that SUN allocated the speed na (meaning parang wala nang burst speeds sa off-peak) then in the morning I get decent speeds na like 100kbps. but at night i can only dl like 1-2 episodes MAX an episode is like 150-300MB big.
so i tried Globe Tattoo this time around. low and behold I was getting 400 kbps in the AM and afternoon. pero whenever I open my torrent, though dl speeds are at 1mbps already, bigla siyang bababa to a mere 10kbps. I am just suprised. Meaning Globe does restrict torrent download?? So what I did was the internet download manager thing. pa isa isang download pero alam mong may patutunguhan ang hintay mo.

so i guess my question is: Is it possible that globe recognizes that I am starting my torrent client and lessen my dl speed immediately!? I am thinking of trying SUN with this new discovery i have on internet download manager.baka mas effective.

    • Malds 30 May, 2013 at 7:25 am

Hey Sam, I’ve noticed this with globe din. Although I’ve been able to download naman na faster than 10kbps, usually bumabagsak nga sya dun even if it’s fairly fast sa normal viewing lang and youtube streaming. I think I’ve read somewhere sa mga local forums na nagcacap ang globe sa torrent speeds kaya medyo malaki yung speed difference nya sa pag nagtotorrent ka na.

Na try mo na ba smart sa area mo? Smart kasi pinaka ok for me pag torrent downloads.

  47. Sam 30 May, 2013 at 7:48 pm

Nagulat ako so ilang beses ko siya tinest and ganun talaga parati.

Problem is, mejo mahirap makuha yung ‘spot’ na full bars. So kung at least mas malakas sumagap ng signal yung mga stick, then bibili na ko.

    • Malds 31 May, 2013 at 12:46 pm

That way you can place it dun sa area na may pinaka malakas yung signal then hopefully abot na wifi dun sa kung san ka normally nagtratrabaho. Like with mine, I always hang it outside the window para full bars, kasi sa loob ng room ko mga 2 or 3 bars lang lagi. Just make sure that the distance between you and the pocket wifi isn’t that large.

Sa signal strength naman, I’m not 100% sure, pero halos pareho lang yung napansin kong signal strength between the usb/wifi devices and yung phones. But then again, di din naman lahat ng phones pare pareho yung lakas sumagap ng signal, some are stronger than others. So suggestion ko is just presume na same sila, I can’t honestly give you an accurate comparison between the samsung galaxy and my usb/pocket wifi because I don’t have a samsung lol.

So yun, mag pocketwifi ka nalang. Another option is kung kelangan talaga stick para maka mura (altho di na din sobrang mahal ang pocket wifis ngayon) bili ka ng usb extension cord na pang broadband (pagmasyadong mahaba na cord di pwede yung normal usb cord lang kasi di nag mamalfunction na yung device, may specific cord daw talaga for this according to cdrking). Then parang isabit mo yung isang end ng usb cord sa area na malakas yung signal tas kabit mo usb stick mo. Then yung other end ng chord salpak mo sa pc or laptop mo.

  48. jose 2 June, 2013 at 2:56 pm

hi ser maids magtanong lang ako what is more durable and more features sa product point of view, sa globe at smart wifi since ma open line naman natin yong device, sa akin lang what device more to choose

    • Malds 2 June, 2013 at 4:06 pm

Can’t say for sure bro sore, pero feeling ko naman mostly the same lang yung capabilities ng both devices from both networks. I’ve never heard na mas lamang yung isang device kesa sa other one, except maybe for the ones na may hsdpa+ vs sa wla, and the ones na may 4g. Yun lang talaga yung kelangan mo tingnan. Everything else is pretty much the same I think.

  49. jose 2 June, 2013 at 6:08 pm

thanks sir malds u realy help,so theres a promo in globe same price 2800 plus but the unit in globe is 4g while smart is 3g so i buy globe and just open line the unit so i can put a smart sim

    • Malds 2 June, 2013 at 7:50 pm

That seems like a good plan :). Pero at that price I’m guessing it’s the hsdpa+ na 4g not the LTE 4g which is faster. But the HSDPA+ is fast din naman :).

  50. som 2 June, 2013 at 8:53 pm

    • Malds 3 June, 2013 at 12:17 am

ok smart ko actually the past few days sa area namin paco/UN. Mabilis sya. Been downloading a lot of torrents and stable speeds nya, umaabot ako 150 kbps and up from time to time.

  51. Jim 4 June, 2013 at 1:38 pm

    Hello Malds,

I recently bought a Open Line Pocket Wifi from TP-Link 3G Mobile Wi-Fi
M5350 in SM Cebu. In the Shop I did following:
    – I put my Smart Sim into the TP-Link and I got 3G

When I went back to the southern part of Cebu (Simala, before Argao) I tried following:
    – I put my Smart Sim into the TP-Link and I only got 2G
    – I put the same Sim into the locked Smart ZTE MF60 and I got 3G.
    – I put the same Sim into my Samsung Galaxy S3 and I got 3G

Do you made similar observation with open line devices?
You think smart detects which device I am using and gives more Bandwidth depending on the device I am using? I think the TP-Link by itself should not be the issue since it has “good specs”.

    • Malds 4 June, 2013 at 7:48 pm

hey jim, the devices automatically pic which network to connect to based on what’s available and the settings it has. You can actually configure the device to connect only to 3g if you want, that’s what I do. Punta ka sa settings area ng device dashboard mo, look for mobile network settings, tas pick wcdma only or 3g only depending on your device.

If you change the settings this way your device will never connect to 2g networks. Pero if you find yourself in an area na walang 3g, 2g lang, just change the settings again.

  52. Jhee 4 June, 2013 at 3:39 pm

Hi po, Im planning to buy a pocket wifi(prepaid) device pero nag dadalawang isip ako if Globe or Smart and with your blog and comments parang mas convinced ako to try Smart, I tried Globe broadband postpaid before sa province and no negative comments about it pero Im working now and I dont own the place so I dont want to be tied, just a clarification with fair use policy, some other sites states na if Globe has 800mb per day, Smart has 1.2gb or something pero per month, is this true po ba or not? kasi aside from playing online games which is my main concern mahilig din ako manuod and mag download and have you tried po ba using it for online gaming like (Dragon Nest) is it stable enough to play at least a decent 1hr or more with no disconnections? please please advice and help me decide, Thanks much.

    • Malds 4 June, 2013 at 7:31 pm

Hey Jhee, first off walang max na 1.2gb per month ang smart. 3 days ago nga lang I downloaded around 3or 4 gig in one day with no problems. And rreonline games,I tried it before pero medyo nag lalag sya. Nakakalaro ka peromag lalag spike sya and depending on whatyou’re playing, that sometimes makes the game unplayable agad.

  53. Rodger De Boer 12 June, 2013 at 2:40 pm

Hi, thanks for sharing your experiences. I experienced the same 800Mbyte per day limit under Globe and from what I noticed, the ‘day usage counter’ resets at midnight. So it is not limited to 800MByte per 24 hour period. So what I was doing was to take up the one day “unli” for P50 at mid-day and start the P2P sharing. When the 800MByte limit is hit then the data transfer stops. Just after midnight it starts up again. So in 24 hours you can transfer 1600MBytes. That was the situation up to February 2013. I am not in PI now so cannot test if things have changed. Just in case someone reading this does not know, that daily limit applies to the sum of the amount of data received plus transmitted ie it is not just a download limit. About the torrent transfers being throttled; I had the same perception that there was throttling applied to the port number. I changed the port number (increased it by 1) and it seemed to make a significant difference. Sorry I cannot qualify the port numbers. I was using Ktorrent under OpenSuse Linux 10.3 going through a Huawei Pocket Wifi 2 E585u-82. Unfortunately, Smartbro was working for me in early 2012 but since Smart put in a new CP tower close by to fix up a poor CP signal problem, they killed my abililty to get any 3G access. The ‘close by tower’ looks to be only 2G capable and I am guessing it is drowns out the distant 3G capable tower. It really would be helpful to know where the CP towers are located and which band they transmit on. When I return to PI I will try to fix that with either a Yagi-Uda antenna or perhaps a parabolic dish with 20dB back:front attentuation.

    • Malds 12 June, 2013 at 3:52 pm

thanks for the insights Roger. I didn’t really think about the 800mb cap being both download and upload usage, but that does make sense. And never knew about the midnight reset hehe. I always thought it was 24 hours from the moment you get the “you have exceeded your blah blah blah” message.

  54. Ken 13 June, 2013 at 3:23 pm

Does Smart Bro allow proxies? I turned my firewall off but d pa rin gumagana. Please let me know what you can say about this. I am using a Unlisurf 200 using power plug-it. Thanks and God bless!

    • Malds 13 June, 2013 at 6:10 pm

I’ve never tried using one. I’m afraid I can’t help you there sorry :(.

Have you tried using scrapebox with the same settings using a normal dsl connection or maybe even globe or sun??? Baka naman kasi sa settings lang sya and it’s not the network (smart) that’s the problem. But again I can’t really be sure. I don’t use scrapebox kasi, although I’ve heard about it, so I don’t know the details on how it connects using priv proxies.

    • tor 24 June, 2013 at 4:13 pm

  55. Chen 14 June, 2013 at 2:03 pm

Hi. I’m on globe postpaid mysuperplan, subscribed to unli surf. So I mostly use my phone as a wifi hotspot and connect my laptop. The average speed I usually get when using torrent is 200-300mbps under Hsdpa (wala pa kasi LTE signal dito sa Pampanga). I mostly download tons of anime through out the day. I download an average of 2.5gb a day but I have never been capped. Maybe only prepaid subscriptions are the ones capped?

    • Malds 14 June, 2013 at 9:41 pm

Hey Chen, only prepaid connections using their supersurf promo are capped to 800mb (supersurf50 for unlimited browsing for 1 day, etc…). I have a friend that has postpaid globe as well and his connection can download over the daily cap.

  56. Frances 22 June, 2013 at 5:30 pm

This is a huge help, sir! I’m planning to buy the globe 4g stick but then I remember the 800 cap since I was also a globe user. My other phone’s network is smart and the 3g of my globe and smart are relatively different (Smart’s way faster vs glove). Thanks for this post, more power!

    • Malds 22 June, 2013 at 5:45 pm

Glad you liked the post Frances, thanks for dropping by my blog :).

  57. Sen 24 June, 2013 at 1:52 pm

Hi ask ko lang, kung for laptops advisable ba yung wifi pocket? or may difference ba sa speed kung dongle or wifi pocket yung gamit. :)

    • Malds 24 June, 2013 at 7:28 pm

Hey Sen, I’ve been using both for a while now and there’s not much difference in terms of speed for me. As long as di hsdpa+ or LTE yung isa, there should be no difference.

  58. tor 24 June, 2013 at 4:28 pm

Kasi kung prepaid ka, using unlisurf 200 for the whole month, you’ll be paying at least P1200 for the internet. Pero pag postpaid, its P1000 lang ata.

    • Malds 24 June, 2013 at 7:35 pm

Hey Tor, sorry I’ve never tried postpaid so I can’t verify if may drop talaga ng speed pag postpaid. I would think na wala but again, I can’t be 100% sure. I normally go for unli 300 so kung apat na ganun 1.2k nga.

In my case though mas sulit pa din ang prepaid sa akin. Kasi I don’t always use my internet. There are some days kasi na nag aaral ako sa coffee bean and may card naman ako so free internet. So in a week, siguro nasa 200 magagastos ko sa internet give or take. In a month mga 800 lang sakin.

Kung emergency naman kasi i can always load it or I can switch in my globe sim which almost always has load. So I don’t need to be on the unli promo everyday.

So I can’t give you any advice dun sa speed dropping issue kasi di ko pa natetest, pero kung sa monthly cost mo, check mo muna kung gaano mo sya kadalas ginagamit. Kung every day talaga, as in everyday kelangan meron otherwise mamatay ka lol, then mag postpaid ka na. Pero if you’re like me na pa gamit gamit din ng free internet pag may time (nakikiuso lang hehe) stick to prepaid.

  59. Ken 27 June, 2013 at 3:12 pm

Hi there SmartBro fans! Just wanna share how I managed to get this awesome speed here at:
I am using a power plug-it bought @ 1245pesos and subscribed with the UNLISURF 200 (5 days unlimited). I am an online jobber. At first my speed was just around 1mbps and went to 10mbps after I manipulated my pc. hehe
First, this only works for PC. You need a 5-meter USB extension cord with Signal booster available at CD-R King (around 200Pesos). Plug in the stick and place near the rooftop or window facing where the 3G/4G tower in your place. For my case, I’m located in Ozamiz which has around 2 Smart 3G towers. I am around 2Kms away from nearest tower.

Second, once the auto play runs, disconnect the stick first like doing on a common usb stick. You must turn off automatic start for SmartBro exe. Go to msconfig.exe then Startup then find the Smartbro UImain.exe and uncheck, Click apply and then ok. Restart pc. Take note, you need to have a good antivirus, antimalware and CCleaner. For my case, I always clean pc first by using a licensed ccleaner especially the antimalware.

After rebooting. Manually open the Smartbro on your desktop to connect to the internet. Go immediately to and test current speed. Take note also that it must be that your place must be in the range where the 3G tower is located (3KM i think is the maximum distance for optimum speed) otherwise it will not work for you.

The factor also affecting your Smartbro’s speed is your RAM memory. My pc specs is decent.
    4Gb RAM memory
    500Gb Hard disk
    Pentium Dual Core 3.06Ghz each
    64bit windows 7 ultimate OS
    Google chrome which is fastest
and of course, your pc must be in shape without any malware and virus around.

Let me know if this doesn’t work for you. I am eager to share other PC tweaks! Cheers!

    • Malds 29 June, 2013 at 1:04 am

Thanks for the tips Ken :).

If anyone tries this out feel free to let us know here on the comments section how it’s working out for you.

Salamat din for reading Marinel :)

  61. Kyle F. Capistrano 6 July, 2013 at 6:08 pm

my download speed is 10kbps to 2mbps when i used smart bro
globe is slow my friend is annoying

  62. E 8 July, 2013 at 4:42 pm

I find na ang cheapest mobile internet is through a Globe postpaid mobile data plan with unlimited internet.
Been using it for almost two years now and there’s no cap at all.
i have torrent on 12 hours a day on my phone usually reaching the t-torrent limit of 250kbps. Then if I need to connect my latop to the internet I simply tether.
I tried applying for a similar plan with Smart before I signed up with Globe, and they told me upfront that there’s a 1.5gb cap on the data usage PER MONTH, once you reach it you go down to 25kbps.

    • Malds 9 July, 2013 at 10:17 pm

Hey E, I think the data cap is for smart phone unli data plans. I’m not sure if the same thing applies pag dedicated internet lang sya na usb or pocket wifi, I could be wrong tho. And yeah, globe’s unli plan isn’t capped I’m told. A couple of my friends use globe instead of smart.

From a prepaid point of view tho it’s just better to use smart in my case because of the reasons I stated in the post. Globe is still good tho depending on where you are. I’m actually using globe right now on my pocket wifi hehe :). Naubusan ng load kasi smart ko haha so I switched in my phone sim.

  63. anton 8 July, 2013 at 8:12 pm

I LOVE YOU SMARTBRO! I travel a lot bec of work there is no one complete week that I sleep in my Makati unit. From Pagudpud to Davao City, Smartbro is the champion in all aspects. Just like some of you guys, I also started with Globe Tatoo back in 2009, and finally ended up with SMARTBRO in the latter part of 2009, nyahaha. It just turned out that Globe was the first rovider that came up with a uSB modem, but SMART considerably oUTSMARTED globe with the innovative and dynamic innovations in terms of speed, data distribution and accessibility. One more thing, SmartBro can also be used abroad efficiently provided you have enough load on your SmartBro through its roaming features.

    • Malds 9 July, 2013 at 10:15 pm

cool, thanks for the comment Anton. Pareho pala tayo haha I started with globe coz… well… wala lang haha. But I hated the cap thing so I switched to smart. I still keep my globe sim tho since that’s what I use for my phone and I switch it in whenever smart’s getting funky or whenever I don’t have load on my smart sim. I’m actually using my globe sim right now haha.

  64. papots 8 July, 2013 at 9:47 pm

was at smart moa lastnight applying for an ipad mini with unli data. sad to know that starting next month their LTE will no longer be free unlike sa globe kahit limited pa yung locations ng LTE coverage it’s free naman… haay nakakapa-isip tuloy if tutuloy ko yung smart… T.T

    • Malds 9 July, 2013 at 10:12 pm

Yeah someone commented bout it na din, smart’s LTE I think will let you do 15 gig ata sa unli plan nila and then you have to pay if you wanna go over that per month. I’m not entirely sure about their LTE setup tho so if anyone here knows more feel free to comment :).

      • mik 10 July, 2013 at 1:04 am

        • Malds 11 July, 2013 at 12:50 pm

Hey mik, yup as far as i know parepareho lang sila. Minsan may cool print lang sa likod ng sim na smart bro sya or whatever pero they should all work the same wayand speeds dont differ from my experience.

  65. nateclimbs 10 July, 2013 at 2:16 pm

HI group first post here. Just purchased a new Smartbro power plug-it Model MF667. Here in Malate i get all full bars in 3G but after connecting it jumps to HSPA, and then the occasional jump back to 3G again, but mainly HSPA 90% of the time.

Question: anyone in the Malate area downloading torrents and achieving decent speeds? I can’t seem to understand why 20KB/s is the norm for me. HTTP downloads through ZBIGZ might achieve 40KB/s at best.

    Any comments??.

Hey nate, try downloading at night. Fastest for me was sa un area sa may american embassy banda. During the day it does sort of level off at around 40kb tho but ive also seen it spike to as high as 300-400 sa starbucks before for my torrent downloads. Your downloading torrent files with really high seeder to leacher ratio naman diba?

      • nateclimbs 11 July, 2013 at 9:08 pm

Hey Malds, thanks for the reply. Yeah the health of the torrent is very good, they’re popular files. I’ll try the late hours and see if that does any good. Cheers.

Im a Globe Tattoo postpaid subscriber from Davao City& I enjoy download speed of 1mbps using torch web browser as a torrent.

  66. Marj 23 July, 2013 at 5:40 pm

    hi maldz!

I’m currently outside the country now and due to go home. Before I left the country i was using smart bro stick don’t know if it was 2g or 3g but I really had a bad experience on it.connection was real slow ubos n load mo di pa naopen fb mo ( I’m from Davao city) kya I need more details on this Pocket wifi thing. I want to know which is better of these two networks when it comes to prepaid connection my main concern is for the video call so to get in touch with my friends here abroad while I’m in PH yeah I’m talking about skype..kc tlagang hndi maganda ung connection ng smartbro ko before but here u are talking about smart I heard dn kc maganda dw ang globe. maybe u can recommend me ur thought and advice?

    • Malds 23 July, 2013 at 10:48 pm

Hey Marj, last time I was in davao last holy week ok naman yung smart. I was staying sa hotel uno (i think) the area na malapit sa ateneo de davao. 3g sya and speed wise it wasn’t too bad. I can’t remember the exact speeds tho per I’m pretty sure I was using smartbro. you can subscribe to the daily/weekly unlimited internet naman so you don’t have to worry about consuming your load. Just make sure you adjust your settings to only connect to 3g and not 2g as devices have a tendency to switch to 2g when you’re in the province.

I can’t say how good or bad globe will be in davao since I was never able to test it out. I suggest you just get an unlocked device so that you can switch between the two to be safe.

      • Marj 24 July, 2013 at 5:23 pm

        Thanks for ur help Maldz.GBU!

  67. Miko Otani 24 July, 2013 at 8:33 am

The speed is not primary issue. I live in Cavite (Imus, near Dasma) and have Smart Bro. Their service shuts down very often, in other words, almost every day the connection shuts down frequently. I will not extend the contract with Smart absolutely.

    • Malds 24 July, 2013 at 1:24 pm

I guess it really depends on your location. Although I do love smart because it’s fast where I live, and because of the unlimited internet for their daily/weekly promo. Globe or sun can most likely one up it in a lot of other areas in the Philippines. That’s why I always tell people to just go and unlock their device and switch sims whenever it’s convenient.

Thanks for the update on smarts network status in your area tho Miko, hope you find a better alternative.

  68. ELOI 24 July, 2013 at 10:53 am

Hi! sir, needed your help…my daughter said that she badly needed an internet connection for her assignments/lectures in school. As a simple mom, I simply do not understand the computer world (aside fr using fb and some games….lol). After reading your blog, mas lalo akong na-confuse which one to buy…SMART or GLOBE pocket wifi? I prefer sana un prepaid lang para may limitation un paggamit niya ng net kumbaga when needed lang sa course niya. Anyway, she lives in the intramuros area. Kindly SUGGEST which one is better as i’m planning to buy na on saturday. Thanks in advance!

    • Malds 24 July, 2013 at 1:27 pm

Hey Eloi, lol I’ve been through the “mommy I need internet phase” haha so I get where your daughter is coming from. I think you might want to try smart kung sa intramuros area yung kid mo. I get decent speeds sa smartbro sa UN area in front of American Embassy and that’s not too far from intramuros so I’m guessing ok din signal/speed ng smart dun. If it doesn’t work out, you can always have your daughter unlock the device para she can switch between all three networks later on. If you’re getting prepaid anyway, getting your pockey wifi unlocked at some point is always a good move. Might set you back a couple of hundred bucks pero worth it sya especially if you’ll be bringing it with you when you travel.

  69. Derick 25 July, 2013 at 7:36 am

Hi, have you tried the Wi-tribe USB dongle? I’m thinking whether it would be a good idea since there would be less people fighting over the bandwidth since it’s not as popular as Smart or Globe. Their Alabang branch didn’t have one I could test, but their postpaid 2mbps wifi looks okay. Your post pretty much convinced me to go Smart but this Wi-tribe network makes me think twice. Thanks!

    • Malds 27 July, 2013 at 12:57 pm

Hey Derick sorry late reply, but no I’ve not tried wi-tribe yet, maybe someone here can shed some light on it. I have read some bad stuff about it though like it not really delivering the speeds it promises :(. But I’m guessing it’s also location specific so maybe it’s decent in some places and bad in others just like globe tattoo and smartbro.

  70. krypton 25 July, 2013 at 8:31 pm

globe tattoo sucks. i hate it i swear.i really thought globe provides a best product in the market today but i was damn mistaken.i dont understand why globe offers unlisurf for the fact you cannot even load the web page instantly.unlisurf supposed to be unlimited but how can you used the said unlimited even loading facebook page takes 5mins to load and it is frequently disconnected or no signal.i strongly discourage anyone to use globe,i swear for your benefits do not waste your time and money.globe must give the full benefits to the consumers they deserve.

  71. jaimie 28 July, 2013 at 6:36 pm

i recently moved to fort area. been using witribe for many years. their speed is good until i moved. now it doesnt have that fast reliable internet speed. maybe its location specific. our building promotes pldt and destiny. i tried those before but didnt work. anyone knows a good internet provider in fort area that works? thanks

  72. ron 30 July, 2013 at 6:04 pm

mald sad to say philippines is way too far if u talk about internet connection i dont know why ?but here in kuwait we spend the same payment monthly if u equate that to peso.It is awesome i mean 100 mbps…..meaning network companies in philippines is full of malicious crap.I even notice how bad our network services compare to other countries….4g 42 mbps … 4g is 100 mbps up….im sad for that coz it does not really affect their business if they upgrade their network system….TUBONG LUGAW SILA…….

    • Malds 30 July, 2013 at 6:24 pm

lol I know it’s really bad here. I remember seeing this infographic before comparing internet speeds around the world and the regular monthly cost for those speeds and Philippines has one of the worst speed/price ratio. But as much as I want the local speeds to improve, there’s really not much us consumers can do. Unless the big companies decide to offer better speeds, improve infrastructure, etc… we just gotta live with what we’ve got.

  73. Shara 3 August, 2013 at 10:14 am

Hello po, im planning to buy smart bro pocket wifi, yung 7.2mbps, i was wondering kung mabilis talaga siya? kasi ggamitin ko lang siya pangskype, and chat, kse magaabroad si bf, para kahit asan ako, may connection pa din kmi sa isa’t isa. hndi naman sguro malakas hatak non pagprepaid? thankyouu 😀

    • Malds 3 August, 2013 at 11:18 am

Yung network itself tho is never that fast, I mean I’ve never actually seen it go as high as that lol. Usually 1 to 2 mbps lang pinakamataas mo na maabot mo and that’s on a good day pa. And speed will always depend on where you are connecting from, with 3g and 4g sa pinas kasi it’s always about location.

I suggest you get yung rocket wifi, kasi yun may HSPA+ (not real 4g pero they’re advertising it as 4g). It’s not as fast as their 4g LTE pero it’s a lot faster than 3g naman so it should be good enough for your needs na. But again, it’ll always be about location and you’ll almost always never get optimal speeds with any device whether it’s glove or smart.

Yung advertised speeds kasi ng both networks are yung maximum speed ng device, not the actual speed of the connection. So medyo madami nalilito dun. Hope that helps.

  74. Kathleen 8 August, 2013 at 6:45 pm

Hi Malds! so nagbablog ka pala! hehe anyway may concerns ako.. :)
I travel a lot and im looking for a pocket wifi na pwd ko dalhin kahit saan to have a decent connection. Binasa ko ang article and maybe bka i have overlooked pero hindi ko makita kng how is the speed kng ggamit ka ng pocket wifi anywhere you go. Na try mo ba magconnect using this when you’re away for a holiday?

    Salamat ng marami :)

    • Malds 8 August, 2013 at 9:10 pm

Kathleennnnnn, my one time surfing friend lol. Stinalk pa talaga kita through your blog’s FB page para ma trace ko lang kung san kita kilala hahaha ;). And I blog, mag one year na yung blog na to this month actually.

Re your pocket wifi question, yung main ko kasi talaga is smart although naka unlock yung pocketwifi ko so I switch to globe din pag mahina yung smart. I always bring it when I travel.

Speed naman nya is good, but you have to be in a city. It’s always dependent kasi on how good the network is in the area that you’re at and pag probinsya, the network is always better sa main cities. Most provinces naman now have at least 3g na whether you’re using globe or smart. Just adjust your settings to only connect to 3g, kasi minsan sa province magcoconnect sya sa 2g lalo na pag nasa road ka or inbetween major areas.

Speed for both globe and smart is decent sa provinces. I’ve seen tacloban and davao match the speeds of manila na, pero in certain areas lang. mas malawak yung good coverage parin sa metro manila ng good-decent network speeds as compared to the provinces. Another thing I noticed sa provinces (tacloban in particular) madalas mag disconnect yung internet connection for some reason even if malakas naman yung signal. So I have to reconnect it all the time. Pero it’s decent enough for facebook, emails, and blog updates. You can even stream youtube decently from time to time.

So yun, just get an unlocked pocket wifi or get a pocket wifi and have it unlocked para you can switch between globe and smart. I think that’s the best thing to do if you’re looking to bring it with you when you travel.

May battery issue sya though (3-4 hours, less pag madami nakaconnect) so you might want to buy a socket to usb charger or a portable charger.

      • Kathleen 13 August, 2013 at 4:32 pm

OMG! ikaw na ang nkalimot! madami kana sigurong mga one time surfing friends kasi d moko nakilala! hahaha same pa nga birthday natin! hmpf!

anyway, salamat! :) i will visit your blog from time to time na. ikaw dn ha?? though tamad akong magsulat. hahaha
so at least one option is to use pocket wifi kasi hina ng broadband stick. I think i will prefer smart over globe kasi limited ang kanilang unlimited surfing. lol ironic pero totoo! kainis! and natry ko somewhere Bicol particularly Donsol and Legazpi mas mabilis ang smart and wlang signal sa globe sa Sorsogon?? i was bringing Globe broadband stick and my other friend brought smartbro at kanya lng ang may signal. tsktsk siguro itry ko magblog if which areas in the Phils has 3G signals and which has better connection between Globe and Smart. hehehe Thanks sa tip 😉

        • Malds 13 August, 2013 at 8:34 pm

Cge I’ll drop by your blog from time to time din :).

Smart in my experience has better coverage nga din sa probinsya. You never know.

  75. makito 9 August, 2013 at 2:52 pm

Smartbro + Connectify up to 255 concurrent connections pa!!!

  76. carlo 9 August, 2013 at 5:04 pm

    • Malds 9 August, 2013 at 5:09 pm

  77. Selena 22 August, 2013 at 11:57 am

May cap din po ba un? Nakabili na din ako smart pocket wifi thanks to your help, kaso medyo hassle sakin pag on the go na walang socket tapos on-off on-off ako sa pocket wifi kasi malolowbat. Thank u so much! You’ve been so much help. :)

    • Malds 23 August, 2013 at 1:26 am

Hey Selena, I have not tried that one yet but if it’s the one for prepaid then malamang may cap pa din yan na 800 mb (daily).

  78. JessiePinkman 24 August, 2013 at 9:40 pm

Hi, Im thinking of getting a smart stick, worth it ba yung extra na babayaran ko para sa power plug in pag nag subscribe ako sa prepaid unlisurf nila? Thanks

    • Malds 25 August, 2013 at 11:11 pm

hey jessie, worth it naman ang power plug it good na yun unless gusto mo mag LTE, mahal nga lang. Sa manila naman di ka talaga lalampas ng 1 or 2 mb pag nag internet ka even on good days, so pwede na yan :).

Yung extra couple of hundred pesos naman (compered to the starter plug it) kahit papano mababawi mo sa extra 5 days na unli surfing.

  79. LancerMode 29 August, 2013 at 8:41 am

ask lng po…alin ang magandang connection globe or smart???ang location ko ay Lemery Batangas..meron ba taga batangas dto..comment here plsss.thanks for reply

    • Malds 30 August, 2013 at 5:08 pm

Hope someone here can help you out.

  80. nikko 3 September, 2013 at 1:00 pm

    • Malds 5 September, 2013 at 10:07 pm

nope wala :). Speed will still be dependent on where you are tho

      • nikko 11 September, 2013 at 12:23 pm

        • Malds 12 September, 2013 at 8:51 am

well yes technically, pero dahil karamihan naman ng pocket wifi devices ngayon mas mataas ang specs kesa sa internet speed available dito sa pinas, pretty much any device will get you the best speed possible in your area for so long as maganda signal na nakukuha nya. So if you’re thinking of switching devices kasi feeling mo mabagal yung device mo kaya bumabagal din net mo, in my opinion wag na. You’re not gonna see that big a jump in speed unless yung bagong device mo is LTE, assuming may LTE sa inyo.

          • nateclimbs 12 September, 2013 at 9:31 am

Hello all regarding LTE devices, id is safe to say a customer is limited only to LTE devices only offered by the major carriers? Meaning LTE sim plus carrier LTE device will get you service in areas with signal. Will my cherry mobile smartphone accept LTE sgnal with new sim?

          • Malds 12 September, 2013 at 6:24 pm

Hi nate, if your device is LTE capable you can connect to either smart or globe LTE if you plug in their sim. Just make sure you’re not locked to a particular network, otherwise you’ll only be able to use that one.

There are actually a lot of aftermarket devices from different brands that are being sold locally that can use both smart and globe’s 3g and LTE. You don’t need to buy the device or phone from them just to connect. All you need is a capable device and an LTE sim.

      • Arcy 11 September, 2013 at 3:42 pm

Sir one quick question. About sa smart. I saw on there website na they are offering Unlimited Internet Browsing
on 3G/LTE Network for 30 days which cost 995 pesos. Then another one UnliSURF1200 which is good for 1 month din. Anong difference nilang dalawa? may limited cap ba per day kung mag ssubscribe ako per month? like 2gb per day but unilimited for 30 days, ganun kasi sa globe. unlimited ka nga pero may limit ka ng 1gb (i think?) per day kung naka subscribe ka ng 1 month. Im planning to buy nexus 7-2 LTE kasi and may LTE naman dito sa Las Pinas, Thanks sir! btw nice blog! :)

        • Malds 12 September, 2013 at 8:49 am

If you have one then there’s not really much point in subscribing to the unlisurf1200 one. Yun kasi yung luma nilang promo for 3g/hsdpa+. it’s still there kasi not everyone has LTE yet.

And as far as I know unli pa ang LTE until end of october ata. So no caps, but they might add one na daw after that.

          • nikko 12 September, 2013 at 3:49 pm

          • Malds 12 September, 2013 at 6:20 pm

hehe parepareho lang yan bro, I suggest just go for the cheapest one you can find. Won’t matter. The only difference that’s ever really mattered to me pag pocket device is yung battery, pero again, usually pare pareho lang sila.

Hanap ka lang ng sikat na brand, pero it’s pretty much just Huawei naman and LTE dito sa atin, I doubt makakahanap ka ng hindi galing sa dalawang yan dito. If you can get one na openline much better, pero kung hindi then ipa unlock mo nalang later if you’re interested in using both globe and smart LTEs.

Try browsing sa TipidPC, madaming stuff dun. If you’ve never used the site, you might want to read my post about it first

        • Arcy 12 September, 2013 at 4:04 pm

And by chance ba sir kapag yung yung 1200/month ang isubscribe ko eh may chance ko ma experience yung LTE speed pag nasa LTE area ako? Kasi pag lalagyan na nila ng cap yung LTE995 i might consider yung 1200/month pag ganun.

          • Malds 12 September, 2013 at 6:11 pm

I can’t be a 100% sure arcy kasi di ko pa nasubukan, but chances are hindi pwede. There’d be no point in keeping the unlisurf1200 kung ganun. Kasi the LTE 995 would essential do the same thing as the unlisurf1200 and it’d be cheaper :).

If you want to give it a try para lang masigurado talaga., since prepaid naman ata kukunin mo. mag unlisurf 50 ka, yung pang 1 day. Kung makasagap ka ng LTE dun using an LTE device then gagana rin yung unlisurf 1200 for unli LTE use. Pero kung hindi gumana, then yung 1 month version nya won’t have LTE din.

Yung best na pwede mo magawa kung heavy downloader ka talaga, after i cap na nila yung LTE promos, is to not subscribe to the monthly ones. Cguro subscribe ka sa LTE na weekly and assuming maabot mo yung cap in that week (parang di naman ata talaga cap as in di ka na makakainternet, parang i throthrottle lang naman ata nila – i.e. ililimit to a certain speed -, makaka net ka pa naman), the next week mag unlisurf ka nalang pa lingo lingo till mag reset yung LTE mo. Kung yung area mo may LTE then chances are may HSDP+ naman yun so mabilis din na naman yun.

          • Arcy 12 September, 2013 at 9:33 pm

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll definitely try both. then i’ll keep you posted kung ano yung mga na experience ko. Guinea pig nyo muna ako hehe!

          • Malds 13 September, 2013 at 8:48 am

cool hahaha, thanks. I’m sure it’d help a lot of other people din if you can confirm if unlisurf has LTE :).

  81. mark 16 September, 2013 at 10:28 am

sir malds may new policy n ba ang smart ngayon for torrent download? suddenly my download becomes slower as if smart dont want me to use torrent at all. same experience when using the prepaid unli plan of sun cellular.

    • Malds 17 September, 2013 at 10:42 am

Hey mark I haven’t checked yet, will let you know once I know. Pero from my own experience I’ve noticed na medyo bumagal nga din. Per in my case it might be area related, I’m gonna do some tests first sa mga areas na I’ve rpeviously had very fast downloads, I’ll let you know once magawa ko sya.

  82. Cynan 19 September, 2013 at 10:17 pm

    • Malds 20 September, 2013 at 11:24 am

San ba bahay nyo? sa probinsya ba to? Kahit ba sa labas ng bahay walang 3g?

  83. melody 27 September, 2013 at 8:26 pm

  84. melody 27 September, 2013 at 8:32 pm

    • Malds 28 September, 2013 at 12:21 pm

From my understanding kasi naka attach sa number/sim yung data limit so whether you use it for a device or a phone, pareho lang.

    • Rab 4 October, 2013 at 11:17 am

So you have to be wary always kung ilan na yung naconsume mo.

      • Malds 4 October, 2013 at 3:24 pm

yup, they send you a message nga wiuth globe na you’ve been downloading too much and that they’re going to throttle your speed hehe. I sometimes miss that message kasi I don’t really check the inbox ng device ko. Pero I remember getting it the last time. The midnight reset helps tho.

I guess there’s really no way around the speed problem really. Kahit sa smart I’m experiencing some slow downs ngayon so minsan napapaglobe nalang din ako. I don’t end up needing 800 mb naman na ngayon so I get by.

  85. Rab 4 October, 2013 at 8:52 am

Grabe ag dami kong info na natutunan just by reading the threads! Thanks for this! I’m considering Tattoo pero yung nga merong cap. Di ko tuloy alam kung anong kukunin. T__T

  86. Jake 14 October, 2013 at 5:13 am

Malds, I need your help! I’m confused, we have both Globe Tattoo broadband and Smart Bro broadband, I always use Globe because it’s very fast but the problem is the 800MB limit, when I use Smart it’s so slow it’s like you don’t have any internet at all I don’t know about the limit though because I haven’t test it yet. I’m planning to get a Wi-Fi pocket device this December as a gift for myself but I don’t know what to get if the Globe or Smart one because I need speed and no limitations ’cause I always watch YouTube videos. For what I experience from Globe is good because of speed but poor in capacity and what I read about Smart that it has no limitation but what I experience is poor in connection, it’s just weird that I have a friend who is using Smart and it works well in their area which is maybe 2-3 minutes away from our house riding a tricycle which very close but why my Smart has bad connection here, is that really a big difference? So I don’t know what to get if Globe or Smart pocket Wi-fi because I need fast speed without limitation. My area is Las Pinas City so there isn’t any problem in internet connection because it’s widely spread and almost all the parts here have internet connection wherever you go, I just don’t understand about Smart why I’m experiencing this. So should I buy Smart or Globe?

    • Malds 14 October, 2013 at 4:43 pm

bro if you’ve already tested them both and in your situation globe works best, wag mo na palitan. Mag plan ka nalang, that way unli pa din internet mo. Yung globe plans wala naman cap. Yung supersurf promo lang. Kasi even if you get a pocketwifi na smart and unli nga sya (wallang cap), kung mabagal naman wala rin kwenta.

  87. Andreia 24 December, 2013 at 11:50 am

    Needs a new update.
    I’m transferring to Globe because:

    -Smartbro sucks:
-20kbps MAX when your connection is throttled because of the Fair Usage Bullshit Policy scheme that was so last century for Netherland’s Standards.
-15 gb Bandwidth limit. Some monitored their usage exceeding. SO it means:
    – Manual throttling by their agents and not their system. In short: BIASED SLOWING DOWN.
    – did I say 15 gb in a month?? If your connection get’s throttled in the middle of the month… you wait for another half of the month because:
    – They reset every first of the month and
    – They don’t reset at exactly 12 midnight.
    – Smartbro wasn’t like this 2 years ago. Before PLDT bought them.
    – Has no minimum service speed.
    – Speed not consistent. You would only see 200 kbps download speed during off-peak hours. If you would use a download manager the average would be at least 60kb.
    – Random and frequent “Cellsite upgrade” – Which really does NOT speed up and improve your connection.
    – Bad customer service.
a)takes at least 10 minutes for an agent to answer (took me 20 minutes probably 30 minutes the longest that I had to wait)
    b) annoying song on loop forever while waiting.
    c) some agents are total amateurs.
    d) no agent would answer the real question: What is the bandwidth limit?
    e) they can’t resolve the problem (not answering directly, dishonesty, repeating what they have already said – in which I DO know that that’s some form of psychological way so I would forget what I was asking)
    f) can’t help me with anything or the worst:
    g) can’t even COMPROMISE EVEN FOR JUST A LITTLE…. WHY are they called customer CARE???

    – Globe has 7 gb bandwidth cap a day.
    – Resets after 24 hours!! and not 1 month!
    – 3 mbps
    – minimum 150 kbps speed.

That’s about it. I can’t judge Globe cause I have only been reading other people’s udpated reviews about it, But I only hear good feedback in contrast to Smart’s terrible service.

p.s. I’m not from Globe or Smart, I’m just an a typical internet user of the new millennia who likes to download. And I am not one of those people that download huge hi-definition movies or any big files. I’m just pissed that a company is not doing the service that it was intended to do and robbing people of their money.

thanks for the comment Andreia, yeah I have noticed that smart hasn’t been as fast as it used to be but since we’ve already got a more or less stable connection at home I haven’t been using my pocket wifi that much anymore. Will start testing again after xmas and doing more research on both globe and smart so I can update this and maybe come up with a new post for globe as well.

Feel free to come back and post your thoughts on globe when you can and if you can be bothered to ;).

Again, thanks for the comment and happy holidays!!!

  89. carlo 7 February, 2014 at 2:34 pm

    • Malds 8 February, 2014 at 10:56 am

Hey Carlo speedwise halos pareho lang sila bro in my opinion. They each have their good points tho so ikaw bahala pumili kung a mas importante. Yung pocket wifi can share wifi with other devices and you don’t need a laptop or a pc to activate it. Ito magalas ko gamitin kasi when I got mine I had an iPad 1 so walang 3g yun. THe problem with this tho is yung battery life nya is mga 3 or 4 hours lang pag tuloy tuloy na gamit. Yung donggle naman yung maganda sa kanya for so long as naka on yung pc or laptop mo di sya mamamatay. It needs the pc or laptop to work tho so portability wise medyo talo sya ng pocket wifi.

If you can get the LTE devices bro solid yun. I just tested torrent downloads on my LTE phone sa makati, malapit sa greenbelt one area, nasa 9 to 10 mb speed sya. I was able to download a movie in less than two hours.

  91. Just4Fun 2 March, 2014 at 12:11 pm

    Good day sir,
I need HELP po kasi I’m planning to buy a ZTE / Huawei Pocket WiFi (openline)

    * I bought a Globe Mobile Pocket Wifi once not knowing na may data cap pala, di ko natiis yung ganung sistema kaya after 1 week tinapon ko lang yun device. Asar tlaga yang FUP na yan.

    tnx po ng marami :)

    • Malds 2 March, 2014 at 12:45 pm

Bro if may globe pocketwifi ka na, just have that one unlocked and insert a smart sim. Wag ka na bumili ng bago.

But going back to your question, yes walang cap ang smart PREPAID (not postpaid/plan) na 3g and 3g+. I subscribe mo lang sa unlisurf.

      • Leo2014 29 May, 2014 at 7:09 am

        Hi sir,

So you mean pag postpaid ng Smart may data cap?? Including Smart’s Easy-Application-Plans ( Sorry I know you dont work for Smart, just can’t find a forum where to get this info but here. 😀 Thanks in advance.

        • Malds 29 May, 2014 at 1:24 pm

Hi leo, sorry im not a 100% sure sa postpaid plans. Pero from my research yung postpaid na LTE meron cap. normal 3g and 3g+ parang wala ata.

The plans in the link fall in the latter category so wala naman ata cap yun. Again, disclaimer lang ulit, I don’t usa a plan so wala akong firsthand experience dyan. I’m just basing my opinion from the stuff ive read and from the comments from my friends.

    Hi Malds,

I found old HSDPA USB Modem MF627 model, I think 1st generation dongle ng Smart Bro. Pwede pa ba magamit, i-update or i-open line ito?

    Thank you,
    Mr. Nanghihinayang

    • Malds 4 April, 2014 at 9:29 pm

Yeah it’ll prolly still work. Plug it in and let the app install. Sa dashboard ng app check to see if there’s an update option, para at least yung software magupdate.

I doubt it’ll connect you to 3g+ but if you’re in a good area, normal 3g speed might bee good na.

  93. Sean 14 April, 2014 at 10:53 am

Top of the morning to ya Malds!

I just finished reading the entire thing and I think I’d also go with smart on this one.

Based on my research and wee experience on the matter:
    1) Is that apparently, my area, somewhere along Apolinario, Makati near DMCI has LTE support!
    2) My phone’s prepaid data plan works splendidly here too.

So that got me thinking – maybe smart broadband is indeed the right choice?
I am planning on using prepaid for it too.

Sorry but this is my first time purchasing an actual mobile broadband and I thought maybe you could shed some light on my problem.

So my question remains: I have absolutely no idea in loading it, using this “unli 50” thing – Haven’t got a clue.

I do have experience in using smart’s ON 299 to 2200 though. Is the “unli 50” and this “ON 299” almost the exact same thing? How do I load this thing?

Please also note that I am planning on downloading whole tv series in one go as well as playing online games (DOTA2, Planetside 2, HON). Although I usually alternate between downloading and gaming, will LTE be able to cut it?

    • Malds 20 April, 2014 at 5:04 pm

Hey Sean sorry for the late reply, joust got back from my holy week vacay today.

The “unli” and “ON” (also known as always on) promos of smart aren’t the same thing. The ON promo is cheaper than the unli ones, say for example in the ON 20 gives you 40 MB for one day. So if you’re only planning to use social media for that day, this might be a better option for you coz it’s cheaper (I believe this promo was actually made for people who only use the internet for social media). Once you breach the 40 MB cap for that particular promo tho you go back to normal hourly rates.

The Unli 50 is as it says, it’s unlimited surfing for one day. So that’s what you’ll want if you’re planning on a lot of massive streaming. You can find the promos here

Oh and if you’re using a device, they can’t as far as I know load the normal way using prepaid cards. So you either have to transfer the sim first to a phone and load using a prepaid card or you just use pasaload from a local smart reloading station.

Re online games, I have tried it with HON and you can play the game. BUT expect your game to be inconsistent speedwise. Sometimes you get normal game speed, sometimes it lags. But this is with just 3g tho since I don’t think I’ve ever been able to connect to 4g at home. if your area has it you’ll prolly have no problems with gaming.

      Good Luck.

Pano po mag unli for 1 day sa Smart Plug it Rocket ?

    • Malds 20 May, 2014 at 10:06 am

hey aldwin text ka ng “unli 50” to 211 :)

  95. Grace 13 October, 2014 at 2:35 am

Hello, hope you can help me, im from Taguig City, planning to buy Smart Pocket wifi, ask ko lang kung maganda baxa mabilis connection at hindi napuputol? also, pano ba yung pocket wifi na un? de-battery ba xa, chinacharge or what po? Also ano po masasuggest mo for me, coz i do have online shop, gusto ko sana, makaaccess 24/7 sa net, with my laptop and phone as well, anytime, anywhere. Gusto ko rin yung truly unlimited po, yung mabilis ang speed, no speed reduction, walang limit na 5Gn / 10GB, truly unlimited talaga, may masasuggest kapoba?, Hope you can help me and thanks lot in advance.! =)

    • Malds 13 October, 2014 at 10:44 am

      Hi Grace,

1.) Smart ok naman sa fort area from my experience, not sure san ka sa taguig tho so I can’t say how fast it is there.

Pero di naman sya as often as before. Pero they work the same way.

4.) 24/7 connection sya and unlimited ang smart prepaid. Subscribe ka lang sa unlisurf promos nila. They don’t cap your speed like what globe does.

Pero again, keep in mind na 3g/4g connection to. This is not as stable as broadband or cable connections. Pero at least nabibitbit mo kahit saan. Kaw na mag decide if this is good enough for you or not :).

nice, natututo ako thru reading… nakakkakuha ng idea which one is best…

  97. oliverbughaw 6 November, 2014 at 10:17 pm

sir, taga batangas province ako. ask ko lang, if mahina ang signal ng network for text at call sa place namin, will that mean na mahina din ang internet connection ng pocket wifi? planing to get a pocket wifi globe kasi mahina ang signal (text at call) ng smart dto sa house namin ih. Hope u can answer this.. thanks!

    • Malds 7 November, 2014 at 7:22 pm

Hi oliver, yup generally that’s true. I can’t say for sure until ma test talaga pero malamang mahina din ang internet. Posible nga na 2g lang yung makukuha mo na connection which is very slow.

It’s best talaga na you test the speed first before you buy a pocket wifi. If you have a smart phone or kung may kilala ka na meron na pwede mo ma try sa inyo, subukan mo muna internet before ka bumili. Might be better kasi na mag pakabit ka nalang ng DSL kung sobrang bagal ang globe or smart sa inyo.

  98. AJ 17 November, 2014 at 11:32 pm

Hi Malds! Buti nalang nabasa ko itong blog mo. I was about to buy a pocket wifi, medyo nag dadalawang isip ako nung una kung Smart or Globe ba. Since nabasa ko to, I prefer to choose Smart. Mukhang mabilis naman siguro kasi since na taga Paco ka, ako taga Malate so same lang area halos. Hehe. Yung 4G nila na worth less than 2k ata yon. Or yung LTE pocket wifi nila na almost double the price nung mas mura. Student palang kasi ako and I need an internet connection na fast enough to play videos on youtubes kasi don ako madalas magaral

    • Malds 18 November, 2014 at 12:53 am

Hey Aj, warn lang kita ha recently medyo bumagal and smart, I think because nag free internet sila diba na promo. Still decent tho but not as fast as before.

Unlimited pa din ang smart tho and yung globe nag cacap pa din after 800mb so sa area na yun lamang pa din ang smart sa globe.

Suggestion ko sayo is to just buy one second hand sa places like tipidpc or sulit. Get one na openline na so you can switch between smart and globe.

If you can get a 4g one that’s always better pero naka cap din ang LTE for both smart and globe.

Mas mahal kasi pag bilhin mo sa smart or globe centers and it’s always locked. La namang masyadong difference sa bago and secondhand normally. Just make sure you’re getting it from a reliable seller.

May times kasi na either smart or globe babagsak or sobrang babagal ang internet so it’s always nice na may option ka to switch to the other network.

  99. Alice 27 July, 2015 at 8:49 pm

Okay, it is July, 2015. On May 1 Globe Tattoo slowed way down. It has never recovered and I am ready to dump it. I used to be able to do Skype phone calls but not any more, too bad of a connection. Many evenings I can’t even open my email. It is as if I am not connected. I live in Naic, Cavite. Does anyone have experience out here in Naic with Smart Bro?

  100. jenga 1 December, 2015 at 4:01 pm

kuya? anung malakas na pocket wifi sa may bandang balibago, angeles pamp.

    • Malds 2 December, 2015 at 9:52 pm

Sorry jenga, if you mean malakas na 3g/4g di ko pa na test sa area na yan so di ako makaka comment kung ano mas ok dyan.
